Mom's Day

Mother’s Day is May 10—have you found the perfect gift yet?

Mother’s Day Gifting

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as a legal holiday to be called “Mother’s Day”—dedicated “to the best mother in the world, your mother.” For the first few years, the day was observed as a legal holiday, but in absolute simplicity and reverence—church services were held in honor of all mothers, living and dead.

In many ways, the family observance much resembled that of the British “Mothering Sunday.” For more history on Mother’s Day see History of Mother’s Day. Here are a few simple ideas that we’ve compiled that are sure to make your mother smile!

Did you know that certain months are associated with flowers? May is known for the lily-of-the-valley, so pick up one from your local farmers’ market or grab some seeds and use our Lily Planting Guide for a gift that keeps giving.

Homemade Shampoo & Soap

If you have leftover soap slivers in the bathtub or sink, you can recycle them into this yummy new soap! Oatmeal has proven moisturizing benefits.

  • Gather these ingredients: ½ cup oatmeal, ½ cup small soap pieces, 1½ tablespoons cooking oil, 1 tablespoon water.
  • Put the soap slivers in a plastic bag and pound them into small chunks.
  • Put the chunks in a blender, add the oatmeal, and pulse until grainy.
  • Pour into a bowl and add the oil and water.
  • Mix with your hands, removing any remaining bigger chunks of soap.
  • Shape the mixture into a ball and let sit until hard, about 2 hours.
  • Be sure to wash the blender thoroughly to remove the soap residue.

Our homemade shampoo is very simple to make, with only two ingredients. Find the recipe here.
