Happy November! In honor of the 11th month of the year, we take a look at 11 favorite facts, folklore sayings, proverbs, and puzzles from the pages of The Old Farmer’s Almanac Everyday Calendar!

Why is November the 11th month of the year? Interestingly, the word “November” comes from the Latin word novem, “nine,” because it used to be the ninth month of the early Roman calendar. March started the year! This was eventually changed by the Roman senate in153 BCE. The months January and February were added so November became the eleventh month. Nov. 2:  It’s All Gravy—To improve the flavor of meat gravy, add the water in which potatoes have been boiled. If the water contains salt, do not add salt to the gravy.

Nov. 3: Cliché Day—Call it a day! It’s a good time to remember to let sleeping dogs lie and that it takes two to tango. Though easier said than done, it’s better late than never.

Nov. 8: “For this is every cook’s opinion, No savory dish without an onion; But, lest your kissing should be spoiled, Your onions must be thoroughly boiled.” –Jonathan Swift, Irish writer (1667–1745)

Nov. 11: Veterans Day—In 1981, Yale University undergraduate Maya Lin won a national competition to design the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, beating out 1,420 other entrants. To help her visualize the concept, Maya had sculpted an early version using mashed potatoes.

Nov. 12: On this day in 1978, Johnny Dell Foley threw a raw egg 323 feet 2 inches to his cousin Keith Thomas, who caught it undamaged, thereby setting a world egg-throwing record.

Nov. 15: Peppery Prescription—When added to food, cayenne pepper can help to relieve sluggish digestion and clear toxins from your system. The hot sensation on your tongue tells your body to release endorphins, which make you feel better.

Nov. 17: Birthstone for November—”Who first comes to this world below, With drear November’s fog and snow, Should prize the topaz’s amber hue—Emblem of friends and lovers true.” –Tiffany and Company, 1870

Nov. 19: Full Beaver Moon—Beavers have lips that close behind their incisors, which allows them to gnaw under water.

Nov. 24: Perfect Mate—Sleep with a mirror under your pillow for three nights, starting on Wednesday. On Friday, you will dream of your true love.

Nov. 28: Turkey Trivia—Only male turkeys (called toms) gobble, which is their way of saying “Hey, lady turkeys, check me out!” and also serves as a warning to other toms to stay away.
