Basic Yellow Cake


2 cups self-rising flour
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
4 eggs
1 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour your cake pan.

Sift together flour and sugar in bowl; set aside. Melt vegetable shortening, cool, then beat in eggs. Stir in milk and vanilla.

Add sugar/flour mixture to egg mixture; mix well and pour into cake pan. Bake for 20-23 minutes until golden brown.

Do I have to use shortening or can I use something else?

Hi, Kay. You could sub softened butter for the shortening if you wish.

What SIZE cake pan should one be cooking this cake in? There is no indication. Would it be an 8" or 9" round or square or a 13" x 9"?
