Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Grease a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan.
Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resemble coarse cornmeal. Combine orange juice and grated rind with well beaten egg. Pour all at once into dry ingredients, mixing just enough to dampen. Carefully fold in chopped nuts and cranberries. Spoon into the prepared loaf pan. Spread corners and sides slightly higher than the center. Bake for 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
