Date Bars

This recipe came from my neighbor, Gladys. She has since passed away but I will always have fond memories her and this recipe.

Bar Crust


1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
3/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1 teaspoon vanilla


In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Divide mixture, and press half into a greased 8x8x2 baking dish.

Date Filling


1 cup chopped dates
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup water


Cook all ingredients together in a saucepan over medium-high heat until very thick, stirring often. Let cool.

Spread over crust in baking dish. Cover with reserved crust mixture and bake in a 345-degree oven until the crust cover turns a golden brown.
