Fruit Cocktail Cookies

This recipe was given to my grandmother in the early 1950’s by her best friend Nellie Anderson. The recipe was written on a scratch piece of paper. I found it in her book of handwritten recipes. I remember my mother would make these cookies when we were kids and they were quite a treat after school. They have always been one of my favorites.

1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1 cup raisins (optional)
2 cups drained fruit cocktail
1-1/2 cups nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves

Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, cream together shortening, sugars and eggs. In a separate bowl mix dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture. Stir in drained fruit cocktail and nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls on cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for approximately 12 to 15 minutes.
