Les Grandperes (Maple Shortcake)

butter for the baking dish
1-1/2 cups maple syrup
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 batch of Aunt Ida's Biscuits

1. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Butter an 8x8x2-inch baking dish and pour in the maple syrup. Pour in the water, then put the dish in the oven until the syrup is bubbling, about 8 to 10 minutes.

2. While syrup is heating, roll out biscuit dough ¾ inch thick and cut out 9 small (1-½-inch) biscuits.

3. Place the biscuits side by side, just barely touching, on the bubbling syrup. Bake for 10 minutes, then lower heat to 350 degrees F and bake 5 minutes more, or until the biscuits are richly browned.
