A recipe from the old Shaker Colony in Alfred, Maine, now but a memory. It closed in 1925.
Cream the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the unbeaten egg and molasses and beat well. Sift the flour, soda, salt, and spices together. Add a little at a time to the creamed mixture, cutting in a few raisins at the same time. Add the water. Drop by small teaspoons on an ungreased baking sheet. Sprinkle with sugar and put a raisin on each cookie. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 15-20 minutes or until browned.
