Wake up early tomorrow, October 8, 2014 for a total eclipse of the Moon—visible throughout the United States and Canada!
This eclipse is the second of four consecutive total lunar eclipses, or what we call a “tetrad.” See all the dates on our Eclipse page.
For East Coasters, the total eclipse begins at 6:25 A.M. EDT; the Moon will be hanging low over the western horizon as the brightening dawn approaches, so only part of the eclipse may be seen before the Moon sets. The Moon may appear larger than usual, thanks to the “Moon Illusion.”
In Central Time, the total eclipse starts at 5:25 A.M; in Mountain Time, it starts at 4:25 A.M.
For West Coasters, totality begins at 3:25 A.M. PDT (and ends at 4:24 A.M.). The viewing is the most favorable out West in the wee hours of darkness—and the Moon will be high in the sky.
During the eclipse, the Moon will turn reddish-orange or what some folks call a “Blood Moon” as it passes through the shadow of Earth.

From Indiana... awoke at 4:15 am and the full moon was almost white with the slightest bite of dark gray beginning to encroach. By the time I got outside at 4:30,it looked like a bright half crescent moon. I arrived home at 5 am and there was barely a sliver of the bright whitish yellow left. I ran in the house and grabbed a cup of coffee then sat on the front porch for the rest of the show. Beautiful!! The moon appeared full again but was Calico: ruddy brownish gray with the slightest tint of orange until it transformed into a red/orange full moon in a clear sky just as dawn was breaking at about 6:50am. Amazing wonder!!

I just woke up and am
I just woke up and am checking FaceBook. I am excited to see the moon. I will be awake this morning! I do enjoy nature and science. I am a Chrisian and am awed to think of creation. John 1:1-5 reads In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with the God and the Word was God in nature. All things were created by him and nothing was made that has bee made. In Him was life and the life was the light of men.
I believe in Intelligent Design. i LOVE the order of the universe!

Iam in India. Whenever I see the eclipses the scripture portion that comes to my mind is Psalms 8:3-4." When I consider your Heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have placed in their places; What is man that you should mind him , the son of man that you should care for him? " Praise God! I too marvel at His creation.

Thanks!
Hi Jonni, I believe that most
Hi Jonni, I believe that most of Alabama is central time; the total eclipse begins at 5:25 a.m. and ends 6:24 a.m. Look for a location with a clear view of the southwest horizon, so that trees and buildings do not obstruct your view. I haven't tried to take a photo with a camera phone; maybe someone else can chime in here. With a normal camera, it's ideal to use a zoom lens and, if possible, a tripod. Once the Moon is eclipsed, you may need an exposure of several seconds.

Hi, Barb, I believe you're on Mountain Time? The total eclipse starts at 4:25 a.m. and ends 5:24 a.m. You should have a much better view of the eclipse than the east coasters since it will be darker.

Hi Rick, You're on eastern
Hi Rick, You're on eastern time so, if you're up, the partial eclipse begins at 5:15 am and then the total eclipse begins at 6:25 am. For folks in the East Coast time zone, dawn is breaking while the Moon is sinking on the western horizon so bright sunlight may make it difficult to see. The West Coasters have the advantage of being three hours earlier so it's darker and the Moon is higher in the sky. We'd love to hear what you observe.

Hi Rudepet, Are you on
Hi Rudepet, Are you on central time? The total eclipse starts on the east coast at 6:25 am; central time is 5:25 am; mountain time is 4:24 am; pacific time is 3:25 am. The further west you are, the best viewing you'll have because it's earlier, i.e., darker, and the Moon is higher in the sky.

Hi George, Yes, it's safe. It's only the solar eclipse that require safety precautions. You can use a telescope, but actually your own eyes will probably be better at seeing dark and light contrasts! Enjoy, Catherine
