I too have had migraines for years and used to take midrin with some help, although somewhat hard to find, a prescription med with isoheptane(?? Spelling??) and caffeine is still available by prescription and a friend still relies on it.
after an increase in my migraines to cluster level I felt no hope in sight I had failed most preventative measures but for a situational depression I was put on Prozac which temporarily intensified my migraines, however I could not taper off the Prozac without an increase in my migraines. I have stayed on this for nearly 25 yrs now and even with a history of very frequent
cluster migraines , I remain nearly free of migraines. This has only been well documented as a use in German medical literature. I will research the topiramate (topamax) as several friends still suffer from migraines and previous attempts to prevent them have failed. Stress can be a trigger as well as flashes of light, loud noise, fluorescent lighting certain foods so you may want to investigate them as a cause and eliminate those that you can.
I love all these wonderful ideas in addition to what really is taken to control frequency and pain to true migrain suffers ..I take 150mg of Topamax to prevent migraines and decrease the pain level when I get one. When I do get them ( bc I still do ..ever since the 5th Grade) I take. Frova or Replax and muscle relaxer and lay down in a dark ro with ice bag. Hope fully the migraine goes away. Migraine meds will only get rid of migraines .,.Topamax changed my life ...I have to say that it's a shame that article after article of promises to try to get rid of or reduce migraine when we all know the above article will not. I am also
True believe altertive health solutions ( hey but I can't afford those ) I started having migraines in the 5th grade and went through extensive testing to find out they were migrains ..my son is in the 4 th grade and has be getting migrains for about a year..I have tracked them and ruled out several things but can not diagnose him myself..not afford the expensive testing required that will be Oder from a neurologist that his peditrication is requiring !
So stop posting anything other then real life solutions too real life problems..

I suffer from massive migraines daily, from the time I get up in the morning til I go to bed at night. Sometimes its hard to shake them,I find that an ice pack on the back of my neck eases the tension of the migrain, but doesnt cure it. I still have it on a level between 1-10 its about a 5. But rubbing Icy-Hot on the back of my neck & on the temples of my head sure feels great & the smell doesnt bother me either, course I've never asked others how it smells either, lol
For migraines I take 2 or 3 over-the -counter migraine pills, plus drink a 12oz. Mountain Dew or two. All the caffeine works wonders in 30 minutes or less every time.
FYI
Mountain Dew is one of the most unhealthy things to drink!
Actually , since the time of the original post I think it may not even be allowed to be sold anymore due to FDA regulations ! How about trying, Excertrin , Coffee, even Red Bull
Not only is Mountain Dew still being sold, you can get it in various flavors if you don't like the original. I started using it for migraines on the advice of my doctor several years ago, and it is sometimes the only thing that works.
a teaspoon of ground ginger in a glass of water will ease and or eliminate a headache
When I have a headache, I reach for my "corn bag". It's a cloth (flannel) sewn bag about 10X6 filled with feed corn. I pop it in the microwave for 2 - 2 1/2 min. and apply to my face or neck. At the same time I drink a cup of lemon green tea while in a semi-reclining position. You can make the bags yourself with your choice of fabric. The flannel is nice for the face softness. I recomment double sewing the seams.
