Leaves changing, sign of early or cooler Fall?

I had noticed a maple tree about 2 weeks ago displaying a few leaves turning. I am on the central east coast. Also saw a locust tree turning, which typically are the first. Its been 65 here a few mornings.

Acorn Winter Folklore

The Editors's picture

According to folklore, an unusually large crop of acorns indicates that the coming winter will be a cold, snowy one. The timing of the acorn drop is not usually considered. However, folklore also states that if squirrels are seen gathering acorns earlier than usual, a bad winter is coming.

my grandchildren have gone to NYC in the summer months, but for the next trip they want very much to experience snow. I need to have an idea on when might the snow come so that I can plan to set a date for our trip. Thank you

Snow in NYC

The Editors's picture

NYC tends to see snow from late December, through January, to late February. We are predicting the snowiest periods to be late December, late January, and mid-February.

We are now in full-fledged climate change. I cannot say for sure when we might get snow in NYC, but it will probably be lighter than usual. Late December/early January. But we no longer have snowfalls as in the past. Again: irreversible climate change. Not good.
