Expect cold weather

G'Day Ann, ...

Wishing you the best of luck and safe travels on your trip to New York City in February. Depending on what part of Australia you're from, you can be reasonably guaranteed to experience weather conditions much colder than you have likely experienced in Australia during the winter.

Make sure you invest in a really good winter coat for your trip, you WILL need it. You can reasonably expect to see evening / night-time temps fall below freezing (32*F, O*C) every night of your stay. Depending on the weather pattern, the temperature might climb above freezing during the day. However, the wind chill factor in our area makes the air temperature feel much colder. If you're planning on taking in a Broadway show in the evening, you could easily walk out of the theater into some really cold air. (example: 20*F, -6*C) Add in the windchill factor, and it could feel like its an additional 10 degrees cooler. [Note: almost all US weather forecasts use the Fahrenheit scale when discussing temperature. Make sure you do the conversions if you're used to seeing temperatures discussed in Celsius. Any temperature below 32*F is below freezing 0*C]

Since the NYC area is where I call "home", I can tell you that there is a fairly good chance you could see at least one snowfall during your stay (especially if your visit will extend for longer than a week). Depending on where you are staying, you might see considerably different conditions in the event of snow storm. Make sure you bring appropriate winter footwear. Snow does accumulate on the ground, even in New York City proper. Sneakers, fancy dress shoes (such as heals, etc.) and snow don't mix well..... ;-)

Extreme snow events (such as a typical northeast US "blizzard" -- 18"+ inches) do occur often, but those events usually happen in January or March. However, it is not unusual to see a snowstorm of 6+ inches at anytime during the winter. Do not fear getting "snowed in". We often experience these types of storms here and most places will usually be dug out / plowed out within a couple of hours after the conclusion of the snowfall event. If you're staying in NYC proper, the NYC subway is rarely (if ever) affected by such events, so don't worry about getting to the theater if you are planning on seeing a show. Even ferry service to the Statute of Liberty runs during the average winter storm here. Businesses, tourist attractions, etc. rarely close during normal winter storms.

I only will offer one absolute "cautionary" travel recommendation; If you are planning on renting an automobile for getting around, make sure you have appropriate experience on driving in snowy / icy conditions before venturing out onto roadways in the area. If not, I strongly recommend making use of Uber, or take public transportation, if inclement weather is in the forecast. Our roadways can become quite "icy". Most of my Australian friends will readily admit that they have never seen ice form on the road surfaces in Australia. Ice forms on our road surfaces all the time. If you're not used to driving on it, you could easily ruin your trip, or worse, land yourself in the hospital... :-(

I hope that answers your question. Don't worry about snow ruining your trip. So long as you don't have to drive in it, you'll be fine. Just remember to make sure you have a good winter coat and appropriate winter footwear. Also, having a good winter hat, gloves and a scarf could come in handy too....

Safe travels, and I hope you have a fabulous trip!

First signs of autumn in the Tidewater of Virginia

Golden Rod and Johoba weed has been sighted in the Tidewater, also a few leaves in the upper most branches of our Maples are showing colour. Had a bit of a cold snap last week with temps here on the Chesapeake dipping to the low 50's, but summer is coming back with a vengence next week with temps in the 90's, and a cool down four days later. I just wish the humidity would drop a bit (humidity is NOT your friend).............garden is just about shot, but it did produce alot of cucumbers, and various tomatoes nicely...............waiting for the full autumn to begin!!I l live in the middle of a maple forest, and sitting on the back deck is like viewing a Monet! (and not bad viewing it with a nice light red wine I might add!)

Leaves changing, sign of early or cooler Fall?

I had noticed a maple tree about 2 weeks ago displaying a few leaves turning. I am on the central east coast. Also saw a locust tree turning, which typically are the first. Its been 65 here a few mornings.

Dogwood berries

Our dogwoods' berries are already starting to turn red. Is this a sign of an early fall? Region 2.

early acorn drops

Early acorn drops, are we going to get a harsh winter. I'm in region #2

Acorn Winter Folklore

According to folklore, an unusually large crop of acorns indicates that the coming winter will be a cold, snowy one. The timing of the acorn drop is not usually considered. However, folklore also states that if squirrels are seen gathering acorns earlier than usual, a bad winter is coming.

winter weather for 2019 in N.Y. when will snow fall ?

my grandchildren have gone to NYC in the summer months, but for the next trip they want very much to experience snow. I need to have an idea on when might the snow come so that I can plan to set a date for our trip. Thank you
