White willy worms. October 2018

Hello im from oxford ohio. I have been seeing white and yellow willy worms all over my yard. Normally i see all black or black and brown. Im just wondering does this mean bad winter? Blizzards maybe also?

Color of Willy worms related to weather

Don't know for sure, but have always heard the black or dark brown worms mean colder weather and lots of snow. I live in Nashville, Indiana, about 50 miles south of Indianapolis (Brown County). Here we are also seeing yellow willy worms. I am guessing this means mild winter and have my fingers crossed that this is true!
Plus if squirrels nests are low to the ground, the weather is supposed to be warmer than normal.

Good luck!

Woolyvworm meaning

Last year (2017-2018) we had white wooly worms, if that helps. I was told by some country folk white meant lots of snow. I always heard black meant cold or severe and brown mild. For example black in middle brown ends mean winter starts & ends mildly with watmer temps, while mid winter would be harsher. White is just snow all winter.

predictions were spot on.

Natural weather predictions per wildlife

Don’t forget the Woolley-worms. My grandad swore by them being the best predictor. The color stripes are supposed to give us an idea by having all black coat/ colder through the winter, brown means milder weather and if it’s black-brown-black there’s going to be cold beginning, mild middle and cold at the end of winter. Just the opposite for a reverse in color.

Yellow Jacket nest and winter predictions

Few years back, my husband shot what he though was a hornets nest from a tree, @ 15 feet high, but found out it was Yellow Jackets, who usually build under ground.
I've heard that the deeper in the ground they are, the harder the winter. That winter they were up in a tree, which, according to that theory, should have meant very mild, yet we had snow measured in feet, instead of inches.. Anyone know of any sayings or old folks tales about this?
Just wondering

Yellow Jacket nest and winter predictions

That was the first and only time I ever saw Yellow Jackets that were not nesting in the ground..

Yellow Jackets

Yes, I've heard of old timers sayings in regards to yellow jackets. The higher the yellow jacket nest is in the tree, the harder the winter can or will be in regards to snowfall. If the yellow jacket nest is in the ground, it typically means its going to be a cold/not so bad winter. If it's in a tree, we can expect snow and lots of it. Also, one year I found a black wooley worm, coal black, and this was one of the worst winters ever experienced. Lots and lots and lots of snow. Hope this helps.

SNOW

The farmer I get my eggs from has a hornets nest that is only 4" off the ground. Isn't that supposed to mean not much snow according to farmers?
