Yellow Jackets

Yes, I've heard of old timers sayings in regards to yellow jackets. The higher the yellow jacket nest is in the tree, the harder the winter can or will be in regards to snowfall. If the yellow jacket nest is in the ground, it typically means its going to be a cold/not so bad winter. If it's in a tree, we can expect snow and lots of it. Also, one year I found a black wooley worm, coal black, and this was one of the worst winters ever experienced. Lots and lots and lots of snow. Hope this helps.

SNOW

The farmer I get my eggs from has a hornets nest that is only 4" off the ground. Isn't that supposed to mean not much snow according to farmers?

Soft Winter?

The Editors's picture

Hi, Duane: There are actually old folk sayings on both sides of this phenomenon, but most are along the lines of “Hornet’s nests high, hard winter nigh.” So low nests might indeed mean less snow. Another tradition has it that the height of the nests equals the amount of snow to be expected. Thanks for asking!

I have a yellow jackets nest

I have a yellow jackets nest in the roof of my house! It has been there since summer. They got in through a small hole in the siding and built their nest, attached it to the bottom side of the roof tin. I have an "A" roof built on. Odd thing is, I was able to walk by their nest all summer, multiple times per day, without getting attacked. They are still there but not as active. Do the bee's die out during winter months? If so, will other bee's start using the nest next year if I don't tear it down? I'd hate to have to tear off half my siding/roof just to remove the nest but I will if I have to.

We Are Supposed to Have Bad Winter This Year.

We Are Supposed to Have Bad Winter just like last year in Western Pennsylvania. When Do Snowstorms Begin. I Don't Want A Mild Winter I Want A Bad Winter.

Winter 2018-2019

I agree with Nick I what a super bad winter with lots of snow and cold
I praying that it will be a super bad winter.

Bonnie, no, you've doomed us all!

A super bad winter is sure to kill some less fortunate people & critters. Please don't pray for this Bonnie, please.

Fall Should Be Coming. Winter Is Supposed To Be A Bad Winter.

Why Doesn't Get Really Cold Till The End Of December, Till The End Of January, And February. Why Is It Coming Till The End Of The Month. Some People Like Snow Some People Don't. We Get Snow Every Year In Pennsylvania. Winter Is Not A Warm Season. Winter Is A Coldest Season. That Is A Mistake. It's Suppose To Get Really Through Mid December And Mid January And Mid February And The Snowiest Periods Will Be In Mid-December And Mid-January, Mid-February. Are We Gonna Have Very Much Snow This Year. I Wanna Have Alot School Delays And School Cancellations This Winter. So I Can Sleep In And Not Worry About Getting Up So Early. We Might Have A Horrible Winter This Year. I Don't Know Maybe. Will Find Out This Year.

seems to me that contradicts what the almanac is predicting. not a bad winter, but more mild, and less snow than normal. I am all for that, as less work shoveling, and not so cold works great for me, I do like some cold weather, and some snow, but not snowed in, when folks are snowed in, the first thing they want to do is dig out! . everybody has different taste coming to weather.i am planning to shovel less, saves my back , but make more snowballs. they are fun. my cats liked to play with them as balls. crazy, but fun cats.! just saying, my take onwinter. i have a beetle, it is fun in snow.

Daughters wedding and the weather on dec 8, 2018

My daughter is planning a winter wedding on December 8,2018. How will the weather be the days surrounding that date? We are worried about the predicted weather for this season and if it will be close to this date. Please tell me it’s mostly going to be after this date.
