Full Wolf Moon

Howl at January's Full Wolf Moon!

December 20, 2019
Full Wolf Moon - OFA

In January 2020, the full Moon is called the Full Wolf Moon! This Moon follows December’s Full Cold Moon, and is the first full Moon of the year and the decade.

Why is it called the Full Wolf Moon? This is the time of year when wolves could often be heard howling! However, despite popular belief, wolves do not howl at the Moon. Wolves commonly howl to coordinate hunting and to mark their territory.

When to See It: This year, the Full Wolf Moon rises on Friday, January 10. It will reach peak fullness at 2:21 P.M. Eastern Time, but will not be visible until after sunset on that day.
