Howl at January's Full Wolf Moon!

In January, the full Moon is called the full Wolf Moon! This Moon follows December’s full Cold Moon, and is the first full Moon of the year.

Why Is It Called the Full Wolf Moon?

This is the time of year when wolves could often be heard howling! However, despite popular belief, wolves do not howl at the Moon. Wolves commonly howl to coordinate hunting, strengthen their family bonds, and to mark their territory.

This wintertime Moon is also known as the Frost Exploding Moon and the Freeze Up Moon, since the cold weather of winter really strengthens its grip this month!

When to See the Wolf Moon

This year, the full Wolf Moon rises on Friday, January 6. Look for it to appear around sunset that evening!
