How to Read the Visible Stars Chart

Use the rise time, “highest in the sky” time, and set time to understand when each star will be visible. The magnitude shows how bright each star appears—lower numbers mean brighter stars.

Sometimes the brightest object in the sky isn’t a star at all.

Planets like Venus and Jupiter can appear even brighter than most stars. They usually shine with a steady light and tend not to twinkle the way stars do.
If the light looks especially bright and steady, it may be a planet passing through the evening or morning sky.
