Eugene Shoemaker (American astrogeologist) died on Friday, July 18, 1997.

He was the first person whose remains have been laid to rest on the Moon. Some of his ashes, carried in a small memorial capsule, were carried by the Lunar Prospector spacecraft, which crashed into a crater as scheduled at the end of its mission on July 31, 1999.
