Mount Washington Cog Railway in New...

Saturday, July 3, 1869: Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire officially opened to the public

The Cog was invented by New Hampshire native Sylvester Marsh to bring people safely and comfortably up and down Mount Washington. The Cog’s first locomotive was a wood-fired steam locomotive named Hero, which was later nicknamed Peppersass (pronounced “Pepper-Sass”) because it resembled an old pepper sauce bottle. Peppersass became the first cog-driven locomotive in the world to climb a mountain–in this case, 6,288 feet up Mount Washington.
