Snow

I have 2 questions,

1. When is the next snowfall in Toronto? (I am not from Toronto)

2. Can you change the forcast so that the forcast is correct and not guessing?

Addressing Two Comments

The Editors's picture

Hi, Padh: Thank you so much for taking the time to make this comment as well as the one below. We really appreciate it when folks like you ask us questions about just about anything! To answer (we hope!) your concerns: Our forecasts use our 228-year-old method that over time has proven (and continues) to be about 80% accurate. The predictions are made up to a year-and-a-half ahead of time; these November forecasts were arrived at this past January. It is definitely true that we do miss things (about 1 in 5 times), but it is important to remember that our Southern Ontario Region 3 weather region is a huge area stretching from the suburbs of Toronto west to the Manitoba border and north almost to Metagama. When we predict weather for the region, we are doing so for the average of the entire area; even when we say “east” or “west,” we are talking about that part of the region in general. So it may well be the case—and in fact is so fairly often—that while in one prediction locale we are right, in another we are wrong. In general, though, the odds are that we will be correct for where we predict. As far as the next “snow” in Toronto goes, it could be at any time, but we see the next big snowstorm as arriving in mid-December. With regard to changing our forecasts, we would never do that. In fact, sometimes we do have that opportunity, particularly for late summer and early fall when we can get a better handle on the near-term weather before our next year’s forecasts made months before are actually published. We never update them not because of stubbornness, but because 228 years of history have taught us to stick with what has worked so well, and in the few times when we have made last-minute tweaks, we have lived to regret them. Once again, thank you very much for taking the time to write!

Snow Storms (Week 1 & Week 2 Of November)

I would like to say that your forcast for the week 1 and 2 is wrong. Sorry, but here in southern Ontario, we got like 30 cm of snow in 1 day. I am not going to use this website anymore. We had a total of over 50 cm in the first 2 weeks of November. I used to think the forcast was correct here but not anymore. Thanks a lot!

East/West

Would Thunder Bay be considered “West” in your forecast?
Not sure where you guys consider the line to be.

Caitlin Snow

Will this year be a white Christmas? When's the first heavy snowfall?

November

Pfft, mild in the west, they got hit with snow today (Oct 23, 2020)

Peter commented July 18 - LOOKING for EASTERN ONTARIO Belleville Kingston Ottawa- I check both the South Western Quebec (west references) and Southern Ontario (eastern references) and try to mesh the forecasts. Reasonably successful but more time consuming. I am 150 km NE of Belleville during summer. Hope Peter gets this reply.

Looking for East of Ontario

Trenton / Belleville / Kingston and on to Ottawa.

Region Missing

Does anyone know how to view the forecast for the Lake Superior region of Ontario? When I type in names of towns along the north shore of Superior I get directed to this Southern Ontario page for some reason. I can't seem to find the Northern Ontario regional forecast page.

Southern Ontario Weather Forecast

It does not seem that the May weather is happening as forecast. We live in Barrie and it has been ..thus far..much cooler than predicted. Would be nice to be able to plan outdoor activities and be reasonably confident that if the forecast is shown as warm and dry .. that it will be.
