i have seen them quite a few times, on my back patio & in my "knock off rose" bush. started seeing them around april, males & females, but mostly makes. im in central texas, just outside of austin
*males
We live on the NY / PA line and have a very diverse habitat including woodland, brush, farmland and springs. The cardinals love it, we have both males and females visit often. They are indeed striking in the snow, as though they were made just that way for our viewing pleasure. A question - why do the males feed the females even though they are there with them at the feeders and could feed themselves?
I have male cardinal visiting often into the trees in my yard. Also have noticed the female but not as often.
I live in central Wisconsin. There is a Cardinal who comes to tap at my window. I’m not sure where his nest is (maybe in the large Spruce near that window) but every once in a while, he will fly around at the window, tapping the glass, then sitting on the window frame or sometimes in the tree, looking in. I like to imagine he’s teasing my cat.
I live in Atlantic City, New Jersey in an area with some trees and shrubbery. The city is primarily urban so this is a treat. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and there's an old tree in the neighboring yard. Lots of birds come to the tree and meet up there. I first saw the male cardinal a few years ago. His singing made me look out the window to see who was making that beautiful song. He spotted me and took off. I've seen the couple together and the female isn't shy like the male. She had no problem with me looking at her. Cardinals seem to be shy birds when it comes to people noticing them. I've only seen them in the tree and not on ground level.
We have a large row of fir trees to the west of our house and i frequently see and hear cardinals. One year I didn’t cut back my sweet autumn clematis that grows really thick and completely hides the trellis it is on. In the spring I was going to cut it back but discovered a mama cardinal sitting on her nest deep inside the dried plant. Since that first discovery I carefully look and always find a nest with babies or eggs at least twice in the spring. I’m in Iowa and cardinals are one of my favorite birds!
I live in rural southwestern Ontario. Our birdfeeders regularly attract cardinals, which love to “clean up “ under the feeders, but will perch to feed also. Their songs and calls are always lovely to hear, snd sometimes I can hear them, but not find them in the many trees and shrubs nearby. We have snow now and their brilliant red is certainly eye-catching sgsinst the white.
"Why are cardinals so red"? "The plumage color is due to it's diet during MOLT'. Following statement, "In addition cardinals do not migrate nor MOLT" ????????????????????????????????????????????/
Yeah ... I noticed that too .. I love them anyway ..
