Cut Hair to Encourage Growth

best days to cut hair for growth

Want longer, healthier-looking hair? Consult our Best Days Calendar to find the best dates to cut your hair for growth and thickness. These dates are calculated using the Moon’s phase, astrological position, and traditional lunar practices.

When Is the Best Time to Cut Hair for Growth?

According to lunar tradition, cutting hair during certain phases and astrological positions of the Moon may encourage growth and thickness. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calculates its Best Days using the Moon’s phase and position in the zodiac.

These dates are based on traditional astrological practices rather than scientific evidence. Cutting your hair does not change how quickly it grows from the follicle, although regular trims remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look fuller and healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you cut your hair for growth?

How often you need a trim depends on your hair type, length, style, and overall condition. Many people schedule trims every 8 to 12 weeks, but those growing out healthy hair may be able to wait longer. Regular trims don’t speed up growth, but they remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look healthier and retain length.

Does cutting your hair make it grow faster?

Not exactly! Hair grows from your scalp, not your ends—but regular trims keep your hair healthy and prevent breakage, which makes it seem like it’s growing faster.

What Moon phase is best for cutting hair?

Lunar tradition commonly associates the waxing Moon—the period between the New Moon and Full Moon—with growth and renewal. However, our Best Days calculations consider the Moon’s astrological position as well as its phase.

Can trimming split ends help hair grow longer?

Trimming does not make hair grow faster, but it removes split ends before they travel farther up the hair shaft. This reduces breakage and can help you retain more length.

How much hair should you trim?

For a maintenance trim, removing about ¼ to ½ inch may be enough, depending on the condition of your ends. Your stylist can recommend an amount based on your hair type and goals.

Is it good to cut hair on a Full Moon?

Many people believe that cutting your hair on a full moon encourages faster, thicker growth—an idea rooted in lunar beauty traditions. While it’s not scientifically proven, it is an age-old practice with plenty of anecdotal evidence!

However, our calculations use more than the Moon. We have calculated our Best Days based on the Moon phase as well as its astrological location and planetary positions for more precise results. Try it out and tell us what you think!

I stumbled on Farmers Almanac years ago. My hair would stop growing just at my bra line. My hair has grown almost to my rear end and I've cut it twice above my shoulders within the past two years- trimming my hair every other month. I swear by this. This has worked for me. I always look for the dates before I cut my hair.

I have decided to wear my hair natural as opposed to perming it. My hair growth is usually slow, therefore when should I cut my hair for growth and how much can I trim to cut off the split ends?

Dear Cynthia Brooks I've been viewing the lunar calendar for haircuts, business etc etc for a long time now. I know it to be very accurate when it said my friend's Health would decline if cut on this day, and it did. What made me get into it a lot more was when I saw if you were to cut your hair on this day it could bring death upon you. That is when I started reading all about it. My Bday is 03-17-1965. And I have stood at the end of the rainbow. Thank you

As a rule of thumb I’ve always cut my hair going into a full moon for growth and strength. It’s always best to trim more than not enough. And every so often add a little baking soda to your shampoo and massage really well into your scalp to help remove excess buildup. Can also rinse your hair with ACV w/ mother occasionally… smell subsides fairly quickly. BS and ACV help keep scalp healthy and hair shafts unclogged 🤙

I swear by this. For split ends, it would be best to talk to the person cutting your hair, you may only need a couple inches or a nice big chop.

When I put the right time zone in it took away my lunar calendar. I am Pacific time zone and live in Las Vegas Nevada it had my location in London. Thank you. Sincerely, CC.

I try to have the days match on both when I trim example July 19,20 it says here is good for growth, the other one says for thickening and I need some thickness so I'm ok with whatever I get.
