Ever feel like your zodiac sign just doesn’t fit? Your Rising sign, also called your Ascendant, may help explain why. In astrology, it influences how you present yourself, how others see you, and even your personal style.

If you want to know what your Rising sign is, you’ll need the exact moment you were born—even a few minutes can make a difference! Ready to find yours and see what it says about you? Let’s dig in.

How to Find Your Rising Sign

First things first: Dust off your birth certificate and note the date, time, and place you were born. Then, use this calculator to get your Rising sign.

Each Rising sign has its own story to tell. Jump to the chart below to see what your Ascendant means.

Did you know? No birth time on your certificate? There’s an old trick for that: find an astrologer who does what’s called “rectification.” They’ll help you piece together the best estimate of your Ascendant.

What Is a Rising Sign (Ascendant)?

When astrologers mention the Ascendant (aka the Rising sign), they’re talking about one of the four cardinal points. Specifically, the zodiac sign that was rising (or ascending) on the eastern horizon at the precise moment and location of your birth.

For example, when I was born, Libra was “rising,” so I’m a Gemini Sun with a Libra Ascendant.

Did you know? The Rising sign changes about every 2 hours on average as the Earth spins along, meaning two people born just minutes apart could end up with different Ascendants. Yep, even twins! Just goes to show the stars have a way of keeping things interesting.

While the Sun sign gives clues to your personality, the Ascendant shows how you present yourself and do the work of your Sun sign.

For example, my Gemini personality is mercurial, adaptable, and curious. But my Libra Ascendant means objectivity and fairness drive me. Because Gemini and Libra are both air signs, I tend to live in the realm of ideas. It’s no surprise that I love to write!

The Ascendant also indicates how you come across to others.

If you’re a Virgo Sun with a Leo Rising, people might mistake you for an extrovert, even if you’re a tad more reserved. But what if you’re a Leo Sun with a Virgo Rising? In that case, you might seem buttoned up despite a tendency for drama!

Where Is Your Rising Sign in Your Birth Chart?

When looking at a standard birth chart—a complete snapshot of the sky when you were born—the Rising sign appears on the far left side.

A birth chart looks like a wheel divided into 12 sections, called houses. If you compare it to a clock, the Rising sign (which might be labeled AC or ASC) sits at 9 o’clock, usually at the cusp of the 1st house.

In the example below, the red arrow points to Dolly Parton’s Ascendant, which is Virgo.

What Does Your Rising Sign Mean?

Your Ascendant tells you about your physical appearance, style, and mannerisms. Think of it as the first impression you make when you walk into the room.

A person’s Rising sign is often more obvious than their Sun sign! Some astrologers say the Rising sign is the “mask” you wear. But I think of it more as your identity, plus how you handle the world.

Aries Rising

The first thing you notice about Aries Ascendants is the energy. These people do not sit still. They’re always on the go and ready for action. Born leaders, they’re rarely taking orders. Instead, they prefer to give them.

Because Aries is a Fire sign, this Ascendant creates a passionate, courageous personality. That can show up in a devil-may-care attitude—or bold, original attire! Aries rules the head, so this Rising always looks dapper in a hat.

If this is your Ascendant, guard against temper tantrums and impulsive actions, which can lead to a reputation for being selfish and hotheaded. A little patience goes a long way.

Taurus Rising

Ruled by Venus, Taurus is a lovely Ascendant. It usually means a strong body, beautiful eyes, and a love of fine clothing.

Taurus Risings know how to present themselves in the best light possible. Regular salon visits and a good tailor keep them looking sharp. Health is excellent, except for occasional throat problems.

Comfort is important to people with Taurus Rising. A cozy home, good food, and money in the bank make them feel good. They shine when in love or in a position to care for others.

However, a tendency to be possessive or stubborn could drive loved ones nuts. Learning to let go allows the gifts of this sign to take the wheel.

Gemini Rising

The one big tell about Gemini Risings: they’re fidgety with expressive hands. They also have sparkling, witty personalities that draw people to them.

Every single one is a gifted communicator and, in some cases, can speak multiple languages. Because they are so clever, they can talk their way in and out of any situation.

When it comes to style, Gemini Ascendants are changeable. One day, they’re outfitted in the latest trend; the next, in sloppy sweats.

Because they’re high-strung, they can suffer from nervous disorders. It’s important for these curious souls to know when to rest. (My little sis has this Rising sign, and all of these traits suit her to a T.)

Cancer Rising

Cancer Ascendants tend to have round faces and soft expressions. Because they are sensitive, they have a hard time hiding their feelings. In some cases, they may come off as somewhat moody.

Many of the Cancer Risings I’ve met love the past—and that might mean a love of thrifting or a penchant for retro styles.

One thing these tender-hearted folks need to be careful of is a tendency to complain. The Debbie Downer mode never lasts long, but while it’s happening, it may drive away others, which is the last thing these sweet souls want!

Leo Rising

For those with Leo Rising, presentation is everything. These regal folks tend to have strong features, powerful bodies, and luscious manes.

They take good care to look their best, even if their means are modest. That means: well-fitting clothes, immaculate makeup, and bold styling. They’re head turners!

This impressive image naturally puts them in the spotlight—or positions of power. They know how to command a room. Some lean toward flamboyance with expansive tastes and an entourage. This can make people assume they’re overbearing.

While Leo Risings can be a bit much at times, they’re actually quite sensitive. They want to be loved and respected. When they feel they’re not, their pride is easily hurt.

Virgo Rising

Virgo Risings are meticulous and well-groomed. Every button is buttoned, every hair in place, and nails usually polished.

Many prefer a “uniform,” so they don’t have to think too hard about getting dressed. Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple and Virgo Ascendant, was known for his “signature outfit” of black turtlenecks and jeans.

This is a reserved Rising, which could come off as shyness. These discerning folks will open up once you pass muster. They’re also incredibly hard on themselves. No one beats themselves up like a Virgo Rising!

How to spot these folks in the wild: the worried look on their face. (Psst…some of the Virgo Ascendants I know are notorious slobs in one area of their life. For example, one was a hygiene freak but never emptied the ashtrays! Ick!)

Libra Rising

Libra Risings tend to be attractive, well-mannered, and gracious. Often, they possess delicate bone structure and refined tastes in clothing. Even those not considered conventional beauties have a way of looking pulled together and polished.

Many people with this placement are social butterflies, always flitting off from one cool event to another. They may also have a wide circle of interesting friends.

One negative trait is a tendency toward overindulgence. Remember, Libra is ruled by Venus, which adores pleasure. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying the good life, but too much could lead to regrets or health issues.

The other quality that drives everyone else batty: Libra Risings are fluent in passive aggression. These charmers do better when they are honest about what’s bugging them.

Scorpio Rising

Scorpio Rising lends a mysterious, magnetic glow to the appearance. They look like they’re up to something (sometimes, they are). Folks with this Ascendant have intense eyes and remarkable sex appeal.

Scorpio is passionate, willful, and intuitive—qualities that may shine through like a halogen light. Dark clothes, statement jewelry, and clean lines suit this Ascendant.

There is also a reserved quality to Scorpio Risings. Rather than run their mouths, they prefer to remain mum, giving little away. However, when they loosen up, their razor-sharp humor can turn them into the life of the party.

Underneath all these positives are simmering emotions that can boil over when pushed too far. Once that happens, look out!

Sagittarius Rising

Some of the descriptions you might hear about a Sagittarius Rising are “long-legged, lean, and fiery.” My husband has this Ascendant, and it’s accurate. (He also has a gorgeous mane, which matches this half-man, half-horse sign.)

Even if those attributes don’t line up, one thing is for sure: this Ascendant is sincere, candid, and brutally honest. Although not always tactful, these individuals are sticklers for truth.

They’re also independent, both in nature and the way they dress. Rather than follow the rules, they prefer to do their own thing, which comes across as fearless and fashion-forward. They know how to stand out.

Sagittarius Risings are happiest when they travel or study. The negative ones can be hypocritical, self-righteous, know-it-alls. (Not my husband!)

Capricorn Rising

The first clue that someone has a Capricorn Ascendant: gorgeous bone structure. Naomi Campbell has this Rising, and we can all agree, she’s a beauty! Classic clothing and a reserved nature are other giveaways.

Although not known for being demonstrative, Capricorn Risings are protective. They look out for their own and will do what they can to be excellent providers. Some enter politics or corporate life, but no matter what field they choose, you can often find them in a leadership role.

Capricorn Ascendants can be pessimistic and dour. Sometimes, they mask it with cynical, snarky wit, which can be charming…or annoying.

Aquarius Rising

This is the Ascendant of the ultimate nonconformist. Rather than follow what’s “in,” Aquarius Risings prefer to do their own thing.

That might mean taking fashion risks or simply not caring what everyone else thinks looks good. It’s the Rising of the offbeat beatnik, the way-out original, and the innovator.

Folks with this Ascendant are friendly, sociable, and tolerant. You’ll rarely find a stuck-up type. Freedom, independence, and humanitarianism mean these Risings are often at the front of social justice issues.

Despite these positive traits, Aquarius is a fixed sign, which can bring a stubborn streak. Once they’ve made up their mind, good luck getting them to change it!

Pisces Rising

Pisces Ascendants are gentle, sensitive souls with soulful eyes and sweet dispositions. They tend to show their emotions on their faces, making it hard to hide how they feel.

Other Pisces Rising traits include being romantic, intuitive, and imaginative. Many of them are interested in the arts or humanities. Flowing clothing with an artsy flair suits these Risings well.

Sometimes, this Ascendant prefers escapism rather than dealing with life’s unpleasantness. When that happens, they can disappear—or overindulge. It’s important for Pisces Risings to keep their feet planted on the ground.

Your Rising Sign Is Just One Piece of the Sky

The Ascendant is every bit as important as your Sun sign. Together, they provide a picture of who you are and how you express yourself. Psst…you also want to consider the Moon sign. The Sun, Moon, and Ascendant make up the “big three” you might hear astrologers talk about.

Fun fact: My son and I both have Libra Ascendants, while my daughter and her father share a Virgo Ascendant. My son looks like me, and my daughter is the spitting image of her Dad!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is your Ascendant the same as your Rising sign?
Yes! The ascendant and rising sign are two names for the same thing: the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you first arrived in the world.
  • Can you find your Rising sign without your birth time?
To pin down your rising sign, you’ll need to know the time you were born. Your best bet is to dust off your birth certificate. If you come up empty, some astrologers can try their hand at “rectification,” which is a fancy way of piecing together your birth time. Just remember, that’s more of an educated guess than a sure thing.
  • How often do Rising signs change?
The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon changes about every 2 hours on average. That means if you and someone else were born on the same exact date (and even the same hospital!) a few hours apart, you’ll likely have different Ascendants.
  • Is your Rising sign the same as your Sun sign?

Your Sun sign and Rising sign represent two different placements in your birth chart. Your Sun sign marks where the Sun was in the sky when you were born. Your Rising sign (or Ascendant), on the other hand, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at that very moment. A Sun sign gives you clues about your core personality, while a Rising sign tells you about the first impression you make.
