Household Uses for Baking Soda

Clean, Freshen, and More with Baking Soda!

Baking Soda

Baking soda is amazing! This versatile substance can be used to remove stains, keep your sneakers smelling fresh, and even get rid of your sweet tooth. Here are some of the best household baking soda uses.

Household Baking Soda Uses

For Health

  • Add baking soda to your bath water to relieve sunburned or itchy skin.
  • Make a paste of baking soda and water, and apply to a burn or an insect bite for relief.
  • If you crave sweets, rinse your mouth with one-teaspoon baking soda dissolved in a glass of warm water. Don’t swallow the mixture; spit it out. Your craving should disappear instantly.
  • To remove pesticides, dirt, and wax from fresh fruits and vegetables, wash them in a large bowl of cool water to which you’ve added two to three tablespoons of baking soda.

In the Kitchen

  • Clean your refrigerator with a solution of one-teaspoon baking soda to one quart of warm water.
  • Pour a cup of baking soda into the opening of your clogged drain and then add a cup of hot vinegar. After a few minutes, flush the drain with a quart of boiling water.
  • To remove stains from your coffee and tea cups, wipe them with a damp sponge dipped in baking soda paste.
  • Boil two inches of water in a pan with a burned bottom, turn off the heat, then add half a cup of baking soda. Let it sit overnight. In the morning it will be easy to clean.
  • Sprinkle a teaspoon of baking soda on the bottom of your toaster oven to eliminate the burned smell from drippings and crumbs.

In the Bathroom

  • Soak toothbrushes in baking soda and warm water overnight to clean bristles.
  • Keep your rubber gloves dry and smelling good by sprinkling baking soda inside them. They’ll slip on more easily too!

On Clothing

  • To remove perspiration stains, make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Rub paste into the stain, let it sit for an hour, and then launder as usual. Find out how to remove other common stains.
  • Gasoline and oil odors can be removed by putting clothes in a trash bag with baking soda for a few days before washing them.

Miscellaneous Uses

  • Add a pinch of baking soda to boiled syrup to prevent it from crystallizing.
  • Lay down a barrier of baking soda under sink-pipe openings and along basement windows to keep carpenter ants, silverfish, and roaches from invading. Roaches eat the baking soda, dehydrate, and die.
  • A light baking soda paste on a damp cloth will remove bugs and tar from cars without damaging the paint. Let paste sit for a few minutes before wiping and rinsing clean.
  • Sprinkling baking soda on your front steps will provide traction and melt the ice. Unlike rock salt, kitty litter, or sand, it won’t damage outdoor or indoor surfaces or shoes.
  • A paste of baking soda removes red sauce stains from plastic.

Use baking soda in the clothes washer to help detergent. Also use as a scrub on greasy pots and pans it cuts the grease without any effort

Baking soda

I use it to clean buildup on hair . Before I shampoo every two to three weeks. It works great

Buy Baking Soda in Bulk

Since I use baking soda for a multitude of purposes, I buy it about 5+ pounds at a time from local bulk foods outlet (double bag it b/c of weight). I use an old large plastic ice cream tub to store it in with the addition of a metal scoop for easy handling. I find this cuts costs down to less than 50 cents a pound.

Baking soda use

I keep a small bowl with baking soda under my kitchen sink. I put my steel wool pad (Brillo type) in it between uses. The soda keep the pad from rusting, so I get more uses from the steel wool pad.

Baking Soda

I use baking soda for my lights, brights and whites. No more yellowing from bleach.
Also for smelly clothes, towels and bedding to remove odors.
Put the baking soda in as the washer fills and let it run with detergent for a few minutes to dissolve, not that it completely dissolves. Leaves bedding and other wash softer, brighter and odorless.

Your Grandad

Your grandfather must have felt so proud of his accomplishment. He didn't think only of himself when he purchased the land. He helped his fellow man. You should be proud of grandad.

Get rid of moles

If you have tag moles, make a paste of baking soda and castor oil. Dab it on the mole and cover it with a bandaid. It will take a while of applying the paste every day, but eventually the mole will just drop off with no scaring or anything. Really works!

Baking Soda

For a sour stomach add a heaping teaspoon to a cup of water. You will burp, and get instant relief.
Breaks down grease and grime on countertops, stove, oven, in sinks.
Mix with coconut oil in equal amounts for toothpaste. Add to facial wash to remove make up.
Add to wash to enhance cleaning clothes. Add to dishwasher to clean dishes.
Add a teaspoon to small cup of warm water for a mouth rinse after brushing teeth.
Sprinkle on dog when bathing.

Another use for baking soda

My mother taught me many years ago to add a pinch of baking soda to rhubarb or gooseberry pie to take some of the 'bite' away. Without so much tartness you can use less sugar.

Gout cure

When my gout begins to flare up, a pinch of baking soda in apple cider vinegar clears it right up.

A question.. Need to know. My fiancé is 69-year-old and suffers from gout alot do you use it internally or external ?

Home made deodorant

Mix equal parts of coconut oil and baking soda. If you want add your favorite essential oil for a little smell. Rub a small amount 1/2 teaspoon maybe under your arms. Might feel little gritty for just a minute and it goes away. Promise it works no stinky underarms. My husband is a believer and it's all natural.

Easy hard boiled eggs

Add teaspoon bling soda to water while boiling eggs makes them easier to peel.

Eradicate snails

Sprinkle entire yard, sidewalk, drive way and especially the garden with baking soda, inside of thick plants. The next day sweep up, or wash away those pesky snails. Repeat as needed to kill the new snails. I did this once last year and will repeat again in spring. Works wonders and is environmentally safe.

For an upset tummy

Add a teaspoon on baking soda to a cup of heated water, down the hatch! Advisory, this will at times have explosive backlash (vomiting) of what is upsetting your tummy but after that AHHHHHHHHH all better. Moms' favorite recipe.

We are fighting a never ending battle with these pesky nasty things. They are in our grass and plants.. On our sidewalk. They find ways into our house and we are constantl killing them daily...We have a pest control service for home and lawn but nothing stops them...Help please... I'm about to go crazy killing them all during the day inside the house.....

Bye-bye, millipedes

Hi, Kathy: Millipedes can indeed be a pain. As you may know, they are detrivores, meaning that they feed on decaying matter. The most important thing to remember in trying to reduce or eliminate a pervasive pest such as millipedes is that you need to be extremely, extremely fastidious, patient, thorough, and nitpicky. The idea is simply to make your place so inhospitable to them that they don’t want to be there. This may be difficult to do in Florida, where you are, but as far as outside goes, start by getting rid of all mulch, dead leaves, dead branches and twigs, and so forth. Not “any,” but “all.” Check this every day for two weeks (sorry). Make sure that your walk(s), driveway, patio, whatever, are swept daily, with the sweepings removed and discarded, not just swept aside. Make sure your garbage, compost, etc., are sealed. The other thing that millipedes need is humidity and moisture. While you may not be able to do anything about the humidity, make sure that there is absolutely no standing water on your grounds: birdbaths, gutters, depressions in stone (empty after rain), etc. Don’t give rain a place to hang around on the ground. Make sure that all drains/drainage is working properly and optimally. Next, seal your home. Put putty or foam sealant in even the tiniest hole. Take your time. Be very, very thorough. Inside, start by thorough sweeping and wiping under and along baseboards, door and window sills, etc. Make sure you have no leaky pipes, faucets, etc. (as the milli’s will “smell” the water). If you have a lot of houseplants with mulch, see if they will thrive otherwise. Another tack that can work in smaller spaces is trying to get them to walk through boric acid or diatomaceous earth, both of which are uncomfortable and have ill effects on them, but it sounds like you are beyond this scale. Finally, apply all of the above information to carefully analyze and secure your basement, attic, garage, crawl space, garden sheds, and/or any other structural pieces on your property. If all of this sounds really daunting, that’s because getting rid of millipedes is indeed a daunting challenge. But if you’re dedicated to eliminating them – or rather, inviting them to leave – you can do it. Good luck!

Reading these hints was eye opening! Grandma was right! So I made a copy for my fridge. Forgot a few. Now I have them in one place. Thinking about laminating them and making my home book for reference.

DIY Chalk Paint

I got this hint from my grandmother, and it works!
If you forget to soak dried beans overnight, or need to make a last minute bean dish, rinse the beans, then cover with an extra inch of water. Out about 1 tablespoon of baking soda in the beans. They will cook in no time. I have found beans to be tender within an hour and a half to two hours of cooking time.

It will also extinguish a

It will also extinguish a small fire. It is the active ingredient in some fire extinguishers. Don't think that it will replace a full size fire extinguisher or remove the need to call 911 but if you have a small fire on the stove, in the engine compartment of your car or practically anywhere else and don't have a fire extinguisher but have a chance to do something safely before the fire department arrives, try covering it with baking soda. A pan of grease, oil or certain foods that catches fire can usually be extinguished by turning off the heat and placing the proper lid on the pan. Be extremely careful to not splash any burning grease or oil, you can burn yourself severely or cause the fire to spread quickly.

Take baking soda backpacking!

Take baking soda backpacking! It does not attract bears or insects, so it is much better than toothpaste. A little under the arms and in shoes keeps you fresh, plus you can wash your clothes with just a little water and baking soda in a plastic bag. Great as camping dish soap as well. Much better than camping soap for personal hygiene, even for washing hair. A little goes a LONG way: half a cup will last a party of 4 for a week! In small quantities, it is not harmful to the environment, but still use baking soda 100 feet away from natural water sources.

Curious, if its safe for the

Curious, if its safe for the environment then why do you need to keep it away from natural water sources? I had not thought of it for camping. Cool!

Safe for the environment

Yes it is perfectly safe for the environment. You need to keep it away from ANY water sources (unless you WANT to make a paste or slurry) as it will dissolve!!!!

Plus prevents the transfer of pervious food odors from entering food being cooked in the microwave.Just remove when using microwave then replace after cooking.

I keep a small dish of baking

I keep a small dish of baking soda on the kitchen counter. It is convenient to dab the dishrag in then scrub a subborn spot on pans, glasses or dishes. As an added bonus, Asian Lady Beetles are attracted to it and are trapped and die.

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in an 8 oz glass of water will almost instantly cure the burning sensation of acid reflux. TRUST ME!!! I use it whenever i eat spicy or Italian food. Plus it doesn't cost 16.99 for a weeks supply of Prilosec.
