Is there a safe way to put out a small appliance fire at home?
Answer
If flames are shooting from an appliance, or if you smell burning odors coming from an appliance, unplug the appliance or shut off the main power. If you have a fire extinguisher, you can put out the fire with that, but do not use water. If the fire continues to burn for more than two minutes after you have tried to extinguish it, call the Fire Department. If the fire is on top of the stove, turn off the burner, leave the pan where it is and cover it with a lid to smother the flames. Or douse the fire with handfuls of baking soda or salt. NEVER put baking powder, sugar or flour on a fire.
