What causes exceptionally large snowflakes?

Snowflakes can get to be quite big. There are even unsubstantiated reports of some 4 to 6 inches in diameter. The really large ones, however, are probably a conglomeration of two or more smaller flakes which have collided, or been pulled together by electrostatic attraction.
