Drink a little Apple Cider Vinegar, that is all you need, works every time.
I have found it helpful to rub the area affected with apple cider vinegar. I keep a cloth soaked in ACV in a plastic zip lock bag by my bed for quick help.
When I get leg cramps in the middle of the night, I drink a shot glass of "pickle juice", within 10 minutes the cramps are gone for the night
Ever since switching to a low carb diet, night cramps, simultaneously in both calf and shin, have been frequent.
Magnesium (mixed salt/electrolyte supplement) daily or before bed helps to prevent them.
More water is helpful.
Maybe even a little leg massage before bed assists the blood flow.
BUT I want share and ask if anyone else has uses this technique. Once the cramps show up, I stand up immediately. Then raising up to tippy toes and squatting down to the floor, and repeat until a couple good ankle cracks and toe pops stops them and i can go right back to sleep all within 10-15 secs. The stretch makes sense, but in my case the stretching doesn't stop the cramp, it does relax it. It is really the crack and pop in my case. (my ankles do naturally crack alot when i go up stairs)
I certainly prefer the preventatives, but the standing tippy toe and squatting instantly stops the leg and foot deforming cramps.
I have no idea why the crack or pop relaxes muscle but it does.
What works for me is sea salt. I keep a little jar of it by my bed and put a pinch in my mouth when I feel the cramp. It makes the cramps pass very quickly. I think my cramps are probably caused by a combination of electrolyte imbalance and medications. Others I've met drink pickle juice. Same difference, I'm pretty sure. I'm supposed to be on a salt-free diet, so the cramps may be a sign that I need sodium, and sodium always relieves them.
For years Uncle has been telling me that he has lumbago. I told him about this article and he said that the stretches were really helpful and helped to reduce his lumbago. Has anyone got any tips on how to prevent getting lumbago?
For years I used quinine for my leg cramps till I could no longer use it due to my cancer meds, and the leg cramps stared again. I must say I drink Tonic water everyday (& still had the cramps at night) Then someone told me to drink more water. I started to drink 2 bottles of water a day in addition to any other fluids and found the cramps subsided. I try to drink more than 2 bottles a day but 2 bottles is the least I drink that stops the leg cramps, ( one doesn't do it)
I found a cure for my leg cramps many years ago. I add a little bit of quinine into whatever i'm drinking soda pop, iced tea, orange juice, ect. It can be easily found in bottles of club soda or tonic water.
I have been plagued with cramps in calves since I was a little girl. I passed on doing many activities because I was afraid a cramp would come on. I am now 58 years old and just found out that I was born with tendons that are too short!!! Physical therapy, massages and expensive custom orthotics didn't help. Just wanted to share this.
I have found that drinking tonic water is a good way to help stop cramping muscles, no matter where they are.
