20 years of very painful leg cramps. Now I drink small amounts of tonic water, which contains quinine, when I workout. I went from cramps almost nightly to cramps once every few weeks.
"Drives me crazy-- until I tried tonic water with quinine--I have also found diet tonic water if you are watching your calories--"
I can appreciate this sight for wonderful news for sufferers...
At one time I had cramps all the time at night. I ask the pharmacist what I could do for them he said drink Gatorade. Well that didn’t help at all nothing seemed to help. I read in my local paper that mustard helps. So the next cramp I went to the kitchen and took a couple tablespoons of mustard and it worked. After a while I had less and less cramps. If I’m somewhere like work and it happens I find mustard. If I’m driving in my car and have one I stop at a convenient store and get a couple of packets. I tell everyone about mustard it’s cheap and works in a few minutes. Try it even if you don’t like mustard if the pain is bad enough you see how well it works.
My first nighttime leg cramps were 25 years ago. They've gotten more severe and more frequent as I get older. But now I know what causes them:
SULFITES
Sulfites are present in many foods, but for me, red wine was the worst, followed by white wine, followed by meats marinated in wine. Cut ALL of those out of your diet, drink sufficient water to avoid dehydration, and I suspect your leg cramps will disappear immediately.
I have suffered for over 20 years with night cramps and found that vitamin K tablets were excellent but recently these have been only available on prescription and are costly. For the last 6 months I have resorted to drinking about 3 litres of water a day and this has totally cured my night cramps. I haven’t changed my diet or exercise regime at all. Just water. So relieved for this simple solution (pun intended).
I have both problems, and have tried most all the home remedies, and doctors advice most work for a bit, but none work all the time. I have been trying the exercise within 30 min prior to going to bed and that seems to work most of the time for the cramps. Sometimes I can tell by tingles and asleep feelings I will have restless legs at night, and I take a couple of buffered aspirins just before going to bed, and most times it works. I know aspirin is not good for all.
I use a massager, it starts on top of my foot or on the side of my calls, it's awfully make me want to take my own life, it's that bad!! I've tried the pickle juice and the mustard, tonic water, nothing works, don't know what to do I just can't take it anymore
You need to go see a neurologist. I had the same problem and found I had nerves being compressed in my back. I took a steroid for swelling and it went away. Sleep on your back with pillows under your knees to relieve pressure or on your side with a firm pillow between your knees. Helped quite a bit.
Any pain this bad calls for a visit with your doctor, Janis. Before you go, jot down a list of when, where, and how often the cramps occur, and the various remedies you've tried to prevent or soothe them. I'd also suggest making a note of the kind of mattress you sleep on, and your favored sleeping position.
Bring the notes to your doctor's office so he/she will get all the specific details about your situation.
I tried every possible remedy to be found on the web without success. I woke up shrieking every night.
Then I realized I never got cramps while sleeping away from home. I removed a 3" thick foam mattress pad from my bed. Since then I've slept on a firm mattress. Not one cramp in three weeks so far.
