Types of Basil
- Sweet basil or Genovese basil is the classic basil most gardeners know, with large green leaves and the familiar sweet, peppery flavor used in pesto and other summer dishes. It is a good all-purpose choice for garden beds and containers.
- Cinnamon basil has green leaves with purple stems and flowers, plus a mild cinnamon-spice aroma. It grows tall and makes an attractive choice for both herb gardens and ornamental beds.
- Purple basil has deep burgundy leaves that add striking color to containers and garden beds. Its flavor is similar to sweet basil but a little more assertive.
- Thai basil has narrow green leaves, purple stems, and a distinctive licorice-like flavor. It also holds up well in hot weather.

How thick should each layer be in a one quart jar, or, I guess, in any jar? Thanks.

Thanks so much... first time growing Basil will try this method this year. I love to see herbs in oil but never knew how to do it.... thanks again!i
Be generous with the salt layer.
Many times I just use the oil on top to cook my eggs or add to a salad.
Remember to use a good olive oil!
When I naturally dry sweet basil, sometimes the leaves turn brown. How can I keep from this happening?
I have some white sticky sacks on the basil but they never get hard. I am sure it is a bug of some kind but not sure what. They wash off real easy but I would like to know what they are and how to get rid of them instead of washing them off as they are there again in the morning.
