Types
- ‘City of Portland’: 4 to 5 feet tall; green foliage with coral-pink flowers
- Ehemann’s canna: 5 to 8 feet tall; green foliage with deep rose-pink flowers
- ’Pretoria’, aka Bengal Tiger: 4 to 6 feet tall; variegated yellow-and-green-striped foliage with orange flowers
- ‘Futurity Red’: 2 to 4 feet tall, on average; burgundy foliage with crimson flowers; self-cleaning (drops spent flowers)
- ‘Toucan Yellow’: 2 1/2 to 4 feet tall; deep green foliage with golden-yellow flowers
- For a tall canna, the Canna Tropicanna® is a popular choice. Growing 4 to 6 feet tall, ‘Tropicanna’ boasts tangerine, iris-like blooms and exotic bronze foliage. Plant in the back of your garden bed or large containers for a dramatic statement on your porch or patio.
- A medium-size gem is ‘Los Angeles’, which has large, deep pink florets and opens out so that you can see the face. Growing 4 to 5 feet tall, this canna blooms from June to August.
As well as medium- to tall-size cannas, you can find smaller “dwarf” sizes and dramatic “giant” sizes!
- Dwarf cannas stand 2 to 4 feet tall and are easy to fit into our downsized modern gardens. ‘Picasso’ is a real attention-getter with bright yellow flowers and deep red leopard-like spots; it blooms from July to frost. ‘Wyoming’ has dark burgundy stems and lush orange flowers that bring life to a quiet bed from mid-summer until frost.
- Interested in a giant canna? One of the most popular is ‘Musifolia’, which grows up to 8 feet! With 3-foot-long red-vein leaves and red blooms, it makes a statement.
Those are the seed pods forming. I had some form on my plants last year and was only able to get 3 seeds in total. I got two to germinate and grow over the winder but I killed them by not paying them enough attention. If you want to collect seeds leave them on there and harvest when the pods are brown and dry.
Bought my 2nd Canna Lilly wish my luck.
By the way I live in Illinois
I've recently moved into a house where cannas are mixed in with the shrubbery. I would like to relocate them to the side of the house. When is the best time to do this? They range from 3 to 4 feet tall and have no blooms yet.
I have had these plants for a year, brought them in over winter, they survived well and even bloomed indoors shortly before I put them back out side. Once outside the blooms wilt before they fully open, are they too crowded in the pot?
Cannas like to be somewhat crowded. Best time to divide the rhizomes is when the plant is not blooming. You can carefully lift the plant from the pot to see if the roots are very crowded. If they are you can break the plant apart with your hands or a clean knife. Make sure each piece has some roots and a growing stem. You may also want to check the plant for thrips (teeny insects) that suck on the buds and flowers. Insecticidal soap can be used to control them.
I would like to try to grow cannas (my mother's favorite flower), but I live in Tucson on a budget. Where would be the best place to go for starters and information on digging up my yard?
I too live in Tucson and had grown cannas up north for years. Recently I inherited 3 enormous pots over filled with plants. I have divided some and am going to divide the rest within the next week or so. If you would like some starters contact me. I would charge very little for them around five dollars per plant. let me know if you are interested.
Do you have any Lillies you would like to,sell. I,have one Tropacanna Canna and would like more. I'm located in Gilbert, AZ.
