Types
- ‘City of Portland’: 4 to 5 feet tall; green foliage with coral-pink flowers
- Ehemann’s canna: 5 to 8 feet tall; green foliage with deep rose-pink flowers
- ’Pretoria’, aka Bengal Tiger: 4 to 6 feet tall; variegated yellow-and-green-striped foliage with orange flowers
- ‘Futurity Red’: 2 to 4 feet tall, on average; burgundy foliage with crimson flowers; self-cleaning (drops spent flowers)
- ‘Toucan Yellow’: 2 1/2 to 4 feet tall; deep green foliage with golden-yellow flowers
- For a tall canna, the Canna Tropicanna® is a popular choice. Growing 4 to 6 feet tall, ‘Tropicanna’ boasts tangerine, iris-like blooms and exotic bronze foliage. Plant in the back of your garden bed or large containers for a dramatic statement on your porch or patio.
- A medium-size gem is ‘Los Angeles’, which has large, deep pink florets and opens out so that you can see the face. Growing 4 to 5 feet tall, this canna blooms from June to August.
As well as medium- to tall-size cannas, you can find smaller “dwarf” sizes and dramatic “giant” sizes!
- Dwarf cannas stand 2 to 4 feet tall and are easy to fit into our downsized modern gardens. ‘Picasso’ is a real attention-getter with bright yellow flowers and deep red leopard-like spots; it blooms from July to frost. ‘Wyoming’ has dark burgundy stems and lush orange flowers that bring life to a quiet bed from mid-summer until frost.
- Interested in a giant canna? One of the most popular is ‘Musifolia’, which grows up to 8 feet! With 3-foot-long red-vein leaves and red blooms, it makes a statement.
Paul it sounds like your cannas need to be fertilized. I noticed how much my canna blooms slowed once they gobbled up all of the fertilizer. They are heavy feeders much like corn! I bet once you feed them you will start to see blooms in no time.
Corn? You feed them with corn? I have a red Canna lillies and the flowers fade very fast. You think I need to feed him corn? And tell me how to go about this corn feeding for my plants. Please and thank you
No you don't feed them corn. He was stating that like corn the cannas need to be feed with fertilizer....
I live on the west coast of central Florida and my friend gave me about 5 to 8 canna last year. I planted them around my above ground pool. I can't even begin to tell u how much they have grown. I'm in zone 9 and no...I didn't have to root them up during the winter at all. I'm with one of the other posters tho. I do almost nothing to them and they flourish. I have all colors except for yellow & red which I bought this year. I planted them amongst the others and we'll see how they fare. Under them I used white marble stone as its around a pool and we cannot use mulch. They are amazing plants. Never had diseases or anything. Very hardy & almost foolproof. In only 1 yrs time I have to thin them out already. The soil is crap mind u. Loomy yucky sandy soil. I use miracle grow in mid spring and that's it. I dead head the blooms & new ones appear always. I have gotten seed but was unsuccessful. I'll try again but I'm not worried about it coz I get a lot of babies that I uproot easily and move...no problems. I highly encourage everyone to try whatever u want with these. They are literally foolproof. I dont have that purple one someone mentioned tho.....I'd love to find those. Also.....my friend encouraged me to plant Four O'Clocks in between them....this way I'd have flowers lower than the canna. Haven't seen much on that yet so again...we"all see.
Best wishes to all. I love these things....u just can't do wrong by them. Oh yeah....I also snip off bottom leaves if they turn brown for any reason. Doesn't hurt and makes them thrive even more.
I have tons of yellow and orange cannons will trade some for red purple white or pink ones .thank you ...tyler texas

I have been reading about starting cannas from seed. They say leave it to the experts. Well, I am not an expert but I planted 25 seeds and got 25 plants. Secret? I filed each seed down to the meat of the seed and soaked in warm water over night. Planted them the next day, covered with plastic bag, left for
a week. Came back and I had cannas that were 4" tall.
