When to Plant Tulips
- Plant tulip bulbs in fall, once the soil has cooled but before the ground freezes.
- Give them time to develop roots before winter. Your first fall frost is not the planting deadline—you can still plant afterward if the ground remains workable.

- Plant during fall as soils cool. October is ideal in Iowa, for example.

When to plant tulips in mild-winter regions:
- Planting may extend into late fall or early winter. Local recommendations vary.
- Georgia Extension suggests October through late December for spring-flowering bulbs.
- LSU suggests late December or early January for pre-chilled tulips in its Louisiana guidance.

Where to Plant Tulips
- Sunny location: Plant tulips in full sun or afternoon sun in most regions of North America. In hot climates, the University of California notes that tulips need some shade after they finish blooming.
- Soil: Choose a spot in your garden that doesn’t collect a lot of water—tulips don’t like soggy soil. University of California recommends a rich, sandy soil for the best growing conditions, though any well-draining soil will work. Need to improve soil drainage? How to Plant Tulips
- Loosen the soil in your garden bed to a depth of about 12 to 15 inches, removing any rocks or sticks that you uncover. University of Minnesota Extension suggests mixing compost or peat moss into the soil with a garden fork to improve growing conditions.
- Plant most larger garden tulips 6 to 8 inches deep and most smaller tulip species 3 to 5 inches deep, measuring the depth from the bulb’s base to the soil surface. Check your bulb’s instructions for the exact planting depth.
- Adjust the planting depth as needed based on your soil. University of Minnesota Extension recommends planting bulbs 1 to 2 inches deeper than usual in light, sandy soil and 1 to 2 inches shallower than usual in heavy clay soil.
- Space larger tulips about 4 to 6 inches apart and smaller tulips about 3 to 4 inches apart. Plant in groups for a generous splash of spring color.
- Set each bulb with the pointed end up. Fill each hole with soil, then water thoroughly to settle the soil around the bulbs and encourage the roots to grow. Avoid leaving the soil soggy.

- Water tulips throughout the spring growing season when the soil feels dry to the touch—tulips don’t like it when the soil is always wet!
- Rain may provide enough moisture, but an occasional shower isn’t always enough.
Fertilizing
- Fertilize tulips only as needed.
- If you’re growing tulips for only one season, you usually don’t need fertilizer. The bulbs already have enough stored energy for their first spring blooms.
- If you’re growing tulips that bloom every year, test your soil to see if it needs fertilizer, and always follow the instructions on the fertilizer label.
Pruning and Deadheading
- Snip off faded flowers before they start forming seeds if you want your tulips to come back next year.
- Wait to remove the leaves until they turn yellow or brown and die back naturally. The leaves help the bulbs save up energy for next spring’s flowers.
Seasonal Care
- Summer: Avoid frequent watering once the flowers are done blooming and the leaves have died back. Tulips don’t like soggy soil any time of year.
- Fall: If the weather is dry, water tulips as needed until the ground freezes.
Types
Tulips come in so many beautiful varieties. Here are some beginner-friendly tulips to consider growing in your garden:
- Triumph: Classic, cup-shaped flowers that grow in many colors and bloom in midspring. Their sturdy, medium-length stems work well in garden beds, though they may not flower as much after a few years.
- Darwin hybrids: Large flowers on tall stems that bloom in midspring. These hybrid tulips come back reliably each year when their growing conditions are right.
- Double-flowered: Layers of petals that make them look like peonies, available in early- and late-blooming varieties. Give late-blooming doubles plenty of shelter from strong wind and heavy rain to protect the flowers!
- Lily-flowered: Pointed petals curve outward, giving these late-spring bloomers a slender appearance. Look for the “Marilyn” variety, known for its red-and-white colors.
- Green-marked (Viridiflora): Flowers with notable green streaks or stripes on their petals that bloom in late spring. “Spring Green” is a popular variety.
- Species, or botanical, tulips: Usually on the smaller side and work well in rock gardens or at the front of flower beds. They look stunning when planted in large groupings!

I live in New Delhi- India, with summer temperature up to 47*c (117F) and Lowest winter up to 4*C (40F). Can I grow tulip in container and how the bulbs could be stored during summer?
Is it required to chill the bulbs before planting?
Hey..Im based in Mumbai. Mild winters, hot summers, lotsa rain...Probably the worst weather for tulips. I planned to plant tulips in Aug last year. Got some purple Triumph and Black Parrot bulbs frm Amsterdam..and refrigerated them till Dec. Then planted them in Christmas in a quick draining bed. Rgt now have the black parrots blooming. So to answer ur question, yes it shld be def possible to plant them in Delhi's dryer and cooler weather.
Will tulips bloom in Delhi
Based on the information gathered by me, I am sure it will bloom in Delhi if planted in peak winter.
I am trying to find bulbs in Delhi but not found yet even online.

I live in New Jersey, about an hour outside New York.
Last year I bought a bunch of tulip bulbs and got all of three blooms... they were a sight for sore eyes.
When the leaves withered in June, I replanted them in a pot and stored in my garage.
Now it will be October, there is no sign of life above the soil, so I don't know their condition.
What should I do now?
We are in Australia and put them in the fridge in paper bags until about 6 weeks before we want them to flower (we take them out of the fridge 6 weeks before the first week of Spring and then they flower every time). Putting them in the fridge mimics their native cold winter environment. If you store them in the fridge, do not put any onions in the fridge with them because they will stop the bulbs from flowering.
You can leave them in the pot and keep them in a cold shed or garage. The bulbs need the freezing temps during the winter months to produce flowers in the spring. Or, you can plant the bulbs in your garden. Discard any bulbs that are mushy or soft.
How wide does a pack of 20 bulbs of tulip a grow?
It really depends if you're planting the bulbs in a straight row or a grove or how you wish to plant. Plant tulip bulbs about 3 to 6 inches apart.
