When I was exposed I treated the itching with “Chloraseptic”, yup it’s a sore throat spray but it has Phenol that numbs the nerves. If it doesn’t itch and you don’t scratch it you won’t spread it. I used to use “Jacks poison oak spray” but haven’t see. It in years.
Last year and for the first time i got it so bad I was in unbelievable misery. We had just moved to the countryside and cleared an area i then picked up all the debris not knowing what it was. My both legs were covered in itching, oozing blisters for 3 weeks.
Tried everything, vinegar, baking soda, bleach. What finally worked was a salve with jewelweed, or impatients carpensis. That and for the itch which woke me up at night, a blowdrier on high hot close to the skin. It oversensitizes the nerves and then itch free for hours.
The jewelweed works so well also for mosquito bites, i bought the oil extract and will be making salves to sell on etsy. Also trying to grow the plant but so far no luck.
I literally have impatien growing all over my yard, I use them as ground cover in a shady area. Can you link me to a site for how to extract from those plants?
Poison oak is especially difficult to identify in the winter as it loses its leaves and just looks like a bunch of sticks sticking up. Watch out because you can still get it from those sticks. With experience you will be able to identify it no matter which stage it is in.
I’ve had both! Terribly allergic. Poison ivy leaves clusters of blisters and poison oak leaves a straight line of blisters. That is how my doctor described it to me.
I used to get poison ivy as a kid and young man and it would spread all over me before I even knew it. I'd fill the bathtub up with hot water, salt and bleach - the pain was better than the itch. Eventually it would slowly fade away after about a month. Now, I get both ivy and oak but it stays localized and I treat it with an ointment I got from my dermatologist.
What ointment did your doctor prescribed
I've had poison oak rashes a few times. I'm very sensitive to it, and it sets in fast, like within 30 min or so... Not fun! When I'm out hiking in poison oak country, I carry a bottle of rubbing alcohol along with Tecnu and a bar of soap. Rubbing alcohol works great -- just soak a bandana in it, and then wipe vigorously where your skin touched the poison oak. It can really prevent the rash from setting in. I follow that with soap and water, and coat my boots and pants with Tecnu spray.
Got poison for first time and it put me in the bed for two whole days without being able to move very much because my whole body was in pain and body was going through hot and cold spells. Would not wish this stuff on my worst enemy. Please avoid at all cost because it real sucks!
Glad u are better; thanks;
