It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Judson “Jud” D. Hale, Sr. He was 93 years old.
Jud was the 12th editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, serving in that role from 1970 to 2000 when he was named Editor Emeritus, a title he holds in perpetuity.
Jud’s influence on The Old Farmer’s Almanac cannot be overstated. More than anyone, he believed in the mission of the Almanac “to be useful, with a pleasant degree of humor,” making sure every issue was infused with a particular sensibility and charm that, to this day, is unique to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Our readers might remember Jud from his TV appearances over many decades. Whether he was teaching Al Roker to hypnotize a chicken or sharing the finer details of ancient dating rituals with Conan O’Brien, he was a shining star with a quick wit and more than a few wise words.
We are heartbroken as we think about the loss of our mentor and friend, but we are also incredibly grateful for his inspiration, guidance, and the care he took in helping to protect the legacy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Thank you, Jud. There will never be anyone else quite like you.
