What you don't get is that back then they had to learn things to survive. I would also bet they had to know how to handle a firearm and hunt, also how to dress it and cook it. Cut firewood and so on. Where we are today is sad. We think our children can't learn anything til college age and then it is too late for them to learn anything because they have been coddled their whole life. I can see proof of that every day on the news. Safe Spaces, gender pronouns, etc what the heck have they done to our children? Time to take a stand and start homeschooling again.
by asking this question we already give our kids a smack . we all would be surprised what our kids could do if we trained them and spoke to them took away some of their time on electronics
I was born in the deep country of SE MS in the mid-50's, and we were still taught all of these things and more; I remember working the fields with my siblings, parents, cousins, aunts & uncles and remember complaining about the rain and distant lightening, I was told to shut up and keep working until that lightening made me quit. These days as a great-grandfather, I can do more than anyone I currently live around or know, my wife calls me "Mr. Fixit" because I can repair literally everything we own, including electrical, plumbing, construction, autos, water wells, septic's, etc…., when I was growing up, we learned to do for ourselves, family and neighbors or we did without. I built my first bicycle from scraps I picked up at he town dump when helping my father haul off our trash, and many of my friends wanted to buy it, it was just that cool. It wasn't us that corrupted our kids, it was the times and peer pressure that made them lazy, disrespectful, and wanting to have life handed to them. Yes, I could chop wood, butcher meats off the animals I killed with my rifle by the time I was six years old; teach them right and they won't get hurt or starve. I still grow my own food and hunt my own meat from land or sea. I love my life, just wish there were much more for me to live. Happy Grandparents Day Y'all! God Bless.
When reading this I felt a sense of happiness. Reminded me of my childhood. I grew up in the 80’s. (Female) My mom taught me everything she learned as a child passing on traditions. Respect, Sewing, crochet, how to properly set a dinner table, baking, cooking, cleaning. We didn’t run to the grocery store. We had vegetable gardens we tended to on a daily basis. I woke up in the mornings just before daylight made my bed, dressed myself, made my breakfast, brushed my teeth all before going out and tending to the animals we raised for meat and eggs. I would go with mom to the barns and help with chores. When we finished our morning chores I went back to the house cleaned myself up and dressed for school. Mom worked a full time job while I was in school. We never had a “ sitter”. Mom cared so deeply about showing me how to be able to provide for myself not having to rely on others. Dad worked a full time job second shift and then worked all other hours on our property and helping our neighbors. When I arrived home from school I sat at the table to complete my homework then went to check on animals providing them with what the needed to later provide back to us. Spending about 2 hours a day in the gardens pulling weeds, composting, watering, whatever was needed. My family benefited from our work and Learned life lessons along the way. Don’t wait around on someone to do it for you or it won’t get done.
Laundry wash and hang on clothes lines fold and put away properly. Ironing my Dads police uniforms so he could look his best. (Back then, officers of the law took pride in appearance and were held to a standard by the department. They were not allowed to exit the patrol car without the police issue hat on) Mowed the grass, Leaf gathering, build a fire, take out the trash and recycling (yes we have always recycled) chop wood, butcher our animals. You’re right, teach them right and they won't get hurt or starve. Weekend were for family time and friends gatherings at our home and enjoying the fruits of our bounty. We didn’t expect anything in return but a smile on your face and joy in your heart.
Take a lesson from the words you read.
Ah, the good ole days!
Things change because people make advances. Kids know a LOT more than they ever did. Who do you think is making it possible for the self driving car, the automated commerce, medica; advances? Its the folks who wish things were "like the good ole days" that ensured the younger generation wouldn't have what they have. For goodness sake, we've destroyed air and water quality, tore down entire forests, etc etc. Man buns and proper gender id is the VERY least we should accept.
Thank you!
My daughter is pregnant with first child due date September 9/2012 tomorrow is August 31 2012 and will be a full moon could she deliver
