The Temperature Conversion Formula

The conversion formulas we use are the standard ones in most textbooks. 

How Do You Convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

To convert temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by .5556 (or 5/9).

  • Example: (50°F - 32) x .5556 = 10°C

How Do You Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

To convert temperatures in degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 (or 9/5) and add 32.

  • Example: (30°C x 1.8) + 32 = 86°F

About Fahrenheit and Celsius

The Fahrenheit temperature scale is named for German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit and is the temperature measurement commonly used by the United States (and its associated territories) and several Caribbean nations. On the Fahrenheit scale, water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F (at sea level).

The Celsius temperature scale—originally called centigrade and later renamed for Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius—is used almost everywhere else in the world. On the Celsius scale, the freezing point of water is 0°C, and the boiling point of water is 100°C (at sea level).

The Quickest way I've found converting ℃ to ℉ without doing fractions or decimals is to round off to the nearest 10th (i.e.10℃,20℃,30℃.....) just remember 0℃ is 32℉ and there is 18℉ difference between every 10℃ and 9℉ between every 5℃. If you need a more accurate reading just add or subtract 1.8. Examples: 10℃=50℉ 15℃=59℉ 11℃=51.8℉ 12℃=53.6℉..... 20℃=68℉ 25℃=77℉ 21℃=69.8℉ 22℃=71.6℉..... 30℃=86℉ 35℃=95℉ 31℃=87.8℉ ....... 40℃=104℉ 45℃=113℉ ..... 50℃=122℉ 55℃=131℉...... 60℃=140℉ 65℃=149℉..... 70℃=158℉ 75℃=167℉..... 80℃=176℉ 85℃=185℉..... 90℃=194℉ 95℃=203℉.... 100℃=212℉ 105℃=221℉

Here's a much simpler method for those not keen on algebraic equations. For a good approximate: To convert centigrade to Fahrenheit: simply double the degrees in C, and add 30 . for example 20deg C is app equal to 40 plus 30= 70 def F To convert Fahrenheit to Centigrade: simply subtract (minus, or take away) 30 from degrees in F, and half it for example: 70 deg F i.e 70-30 = 40, divide 40 by 2 ( or half that amount) = 20 deg C

Instead of using F=(9/5)C+32; it is easier if you don't have a calculator to use (2)C+32-C/5. Estimates are easy if you round to the nearest 5. Example: 20C = 2(20)+32-20/5=40+32-4=68F The benefit of using this formula is that it is easier to use in your head and the answer is exact; So it works in a calculator too!
