Cut Hair to Encourage Growth

best days to cut hair for growth

Want longer, healthier-looking hair? Consult our Best Days Calendar to find the best dates to cut your hair for growth and thickness. These dates are calculated using the Moon’s phase, astrological position, and traditional lunar practices.

When Is the Best Time to Cut Hair for Growth?

According to lunar tradition, cutting hair during certain phases and astrological positions of the Moon may encourage growth and thickness. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calculates its Best Days using the Moon’s phase and position in the zodiac.

These dates are based on traditional astrological practices rather than scientific evidence. Cutting your hair does not change how quickly it grows from the follicle, although regular trims remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look fuller and healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you cut your hair for growth?

How often you need a trim depends on your hair type, length, style, and overall condition. Many people schedule trims every 8 to 12 weeks, but those growing out healthy hair may be able to wait longer. Regular trims don’t speed up growth, but they remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look healthier and retain length.

Does cutting your hair make it grow faster?

Not exactly! Hair grows from your scalp, not your ends—but regular trims keep your hair healthy and prevent breakage, which makes it seem like it’s growing faster.

What Moon phase is best for cutting hair?

Lunar tradition commonly associates the waxing Moon—the period between the New Moon and Full Moon—with growth and renewal. However, our Best Days calculations consider the Moon’s astrological position as well as its phase.

Can trimming split ends help hair grow longer?

Trimming does not make hair grow faster, but it removes split ends before they travel farther up the hair shaft. This reduces breakage and can help you retain more length.

How much hair should you trim?

For a maintenance trim, removing about ¼ to ½ inch may be enough, depending on the condition of your ends. Your stylist can recommend an amount based on your hair type and goals.

Is it good to cut hair on a Full Moon?

Many people believe that cutting your hair on a full moon encourages faster, thicker growth—an idea rooted in lunar beauty traditions. While it’s not scientifically proven, it is an age-old practice with plenty of anecdotal evidence!

However, our calculations use more than the Moon. We have calculated our Best Days based on the Moon phase as well as its astrological location and planetary positions for more precise results. Try it out and tell us what you think!

What about days that are in-between the growth days and the non growth days ? What effect do they have ?

My hair grows VERY fast, I would like it to grow more slowly (fewer haircuts necessary!), but my hair is THINNING and I would love to know when to cut it for THICKNESS and strength. Also... isn't there a sign under which it is said to promote curly/wavy hair? Thank you so much! Andréa

For Slowing Growth (Maintaining Short Styles): Cut during the Waning Moon (from the Full Moon to the New Moon). This phase is ideal if you want your cuts to last longer.

Why is the farmers alamanac being discontinued?
Kat Wed, 04/08/2026 - 15:05
Most likely because the scientists behind the almanac stated clearly that there's was not further proof of anything beyond 2016. I'm thinking this was mostly because the powers that be thought they knew better than God, what our weather should be like St any given time and area. They have messed with it so egregiously that we no longer have defined seasons, nor do we have the 7 & 7 we once did. (7 years of rain, 7 years of drought). While the dry times were rough, it worked for better than what they've got going on now. Because of them interference, it became impossible for them to calculate the annual forecast properly. Also, with them "solar curtain" they've been putting into effect, that changes things as well.

I'm here because the Farmer's Almanac is being discontinued. I always used their dates and their website provided more than just random days. So sad.

Mena, The Old Farmer's Almanac that has been around for many, many years is not the one being discontinued. It's the newer one The Farmers Almanac that's going away.
