Cut Hair to Encourage Growth

best days to cut hair for growth

Want longer, healthier-looking hair? Consult our Best Days Calendar to find the best dates to cut your hair for growth and thickness. These dates are calculated using the Moon’s phase, astrological position, and traditional lunar practices.

When Is the Best Time to Cut Hair for Growth?

According to lunar tradition, cutting hair during certain phases and astrological positions of the Moon may encourage growth and thickness. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calculates its Best Days using the Moon’s phase and position in the zodiac.

These dates are based on traditional astrological practices rather than scientific evidence. Cutting your hair does not change how quickly it grows from the follicle, although regular trims remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look fuller and healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you cut your hair for growth?

How often you need a trim depends on your hair type, length, style, and overall condition. Many people schedule trims every 8 to 12 weeks, but those growing out healthy hair may be able to wait longer. Regular trims don’t speed up growth, but they remove split ends and reduce breakage, helping hair look healthier and retain length.

Does cutting your hair make it grow faster?

Not exactly! Hair grows from your scalp, not your ends—but regular trims keep your hair healthy and prevent breakage, which makes it seem like it’s growing faster.

What Moon phase is best for cutting hair?

Lunar tradition commonly associates the waxing Moon—the period between the New Moon and Full Moon—with growth and renewal. However, our Best Days calculations consider the Moon’s astrological position as well as its phase.

Can trimming split ends help hair grow longer?

Trimming does not make hair grow faster, but it removes split ends before they travel farther up the hair shaft. This reduces breakage and can help you retain more length.

How much hair should you trim?

For a maintenance trim, removing about ¼ to ½ inch may be enough, depending on the condition of your ends. Your stylist can recommend an amount based on your hair type and goals.

Is it good to cut hair on a Full Moon?

Many people believe that cutting your hair on a full moon encourages faster, thicker growth—an idea rooted in lunar beauty traditions. While it’s not scientifically proven, it is an age-old practice with plenty of anecdotal evidence!

However, our calculations use more than the Moon. We have calculated our Best Days based on the Moon phase as well as its astrological location and planetary positions for more precise results. Try it out and tell us what you think!

Kathy You have given me something new to consider, graying hair. I am on a personal wellness journey and unit recently started learning and following moon phases and other natural remedies. I’m in my early 50’s and no gray head to speak of, but I’m very curious if you personally have other habits or cares you do for your hair health (body health or anything else) that you believe may have influenced your health, long, non (or minimal) gray hair results. TIA

8/25,26,27 are waxing crescent whereas 9/22,23 are new moon. Wouldn’t the 9/24,25 be more accurate? According to the moon phase.

Agree 100%. Sadly most people, it seems, are morons. The comments section on any website does not add value - it's just a place for trolls and idiots.

You could just not read them. There are no stupid questions. What you know/understand may not be what others do. Thx

Can you do more than 5 days out? My hair dress is always booked at least 8 weeks out, so right now (July 9th) it's only showing through August, and I need the September and October dates. Thank you!

Buy the book! That way you have a full year of dates. It really works.
