I am not a fan of landscaping fabric. First of all, most landscaping fabric is petroleum based and never decomposes. Landscaping fabric will prevent the seeds that are in the soil already from sprouting, but it does nothing to stop seeds from blowing in and landing on top of the soil. When these seeds germinate, the roots become entangled in the landscaping fabric and are harder to remove. In other words, the landscaping fabric works only once, but remains forever. Biodegradable materials are just effective in preventing the initial on slot of weeds from seeds already in the soil, cost less, and are much more eco-friendly. Try using news paper or cardboard.
