Thanks for the question. Ground covers are a great alternative to traditional lawns. Many will grow low to the ground (no mowing) and withstand the foot traffic that will come with your new dog and its play.

Since all plants, including ground covers, have specific areas in which they thrive, it would be best for you to reach out to your state’s cooperative extension. They will have be able to provide you with options that thrive in your area, given your need for something that grows well in full Sun and is durable. Just remember that some ground covers can be considered invasive due to spreading and can also require a lot of attention when establishing.
