We got a wood burning stove. Whenever we run it, we can shut the heat off. It warms up the whole house, better than our gas heating system. The free-standing models are the most efficient, but we had to get a fireplace insert due to space constraints. Still, we get temperatures in the low 70's upstairs even if it's in the low 20's outside with howling winds. In the teens or single digits, we get temperatures in the high 60's upstairs. The room with the stove can get way too warm, but I don't mind!
