Washington was 67 years old when he died on December 14, 1799. He was in retirement then at his Mount Vernon home and contracted quinsy (an infection of the tonsils) or acute laryngitis after a long horse ride in cold, damp weather. He was born on February 22, 1732, to Augustine and Mary Ball Washington, prosperous Virginians of English descent.
