Which is smaller, an atom or an ion?

An ion is formed when a neutral atom or group of atoms gains or loses one or more electrons. An atom that loses an electron is a positively charged ion, called a cation; an atom that gains an electron is a negatively charged ion, called an anion. Since both are atoms, only with different charges, they are of equal size.
