Why do so many cats in New England have double paws (extra toes) and what causes this?
This polydactylism, the presence of extra toes, is inherited and appears to be a trait caused by a single gene. If you’re seeing a lot of it in New England, it could be indicative of inbreeding and a “closed” gene pool that causes this recessive gene to prevail in your local cats.
