Why do so many cats in New England have double paws (extra toes) and what causes this?
Answer
This polydactylism, the presence of extra toes, is inherited and appears to be a trait caused by a single gene. If you’re seeing a lot of it in New England, it could be indicative of inbreeding and a β€œclosed” gene pool that causes this recessive gene to prevail in your local cats.
