Why do they call the president’s wife the first lady and when was the term first used?
Although Martha Washington is referred to as the first First Lady, she was actually called by a variety of titles, including Mrs. President or Lady Washington. It wasn’t until 1877, during the presidency of Rutherford B Hayes, that his wife, Lucy Hayes (1831 - 1889) was referred to as the First Lady.
