Why do we call coffee "joe"?
Why do we call coffee “joe”?
Answer
This term originated in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Sailors probably shortened the phrase “a cup of java” (a slang term for coffee, since most coffee beans came from the island of Java at the time) to “a cup of j” or “a cup of joe.”
