Question
Why do we refer to royal or the rich as βblue bloods?β
Answer
In French, the phrase is Sang Bleu and is applied to those of high aristocratic descent. It apparently derived from a custom in Spain. There the old, established families who could trace their lineage beyond the time of the Moorish conquest were fond of saying their blood was blue, while that of the βcommonβ people was black.
