I take a magnesium and a potassium tablet before bed and that has solved my leg and feet cramps.
250 mg of magnesium oxide daily, and knitted legwarmers (hello "Flashdance") if you sleep in a cold bedroom.
Even when it's not gin-and-tonic season, I keep diet quinine water in the frig for treating muscle cramps. A small glass drunk at the first sign of cramps anywhere -- toes, feet, legs, hands, neck -- works immediately. I would be interested to know if quinine water has failed anyone who's tried it. It is so effective and much more pleasant than some of the old-wives' remedies often suggested.
I’ve been drinking a glass of quinine in the morning and at night now for about 6 months and I actually haven’t noticed that much difference but the quinine does taste pretty good. I try to stretch a lot before going to bed too.
I had leg cramps, someone said quinine water would help. Also have recurring pancreatitis, ate carefully for last 3 yrs with no re-ocurrence, drank quinine water for cramps and had an attack of pancreatitis within 2 weeks. Google said quinine is a possible cause of pancreatitis. From now on I will check side effects of supplements before using them.
I have not had a problem if over two years, but was having this condition frequently! Knowing that bananas have potassium and that is said to help, I looked into the supplement potassium gluconate. In talking with my PCP, he discontinued the medication Gemfibrozil (which is for reducing triglycerides) which he said can also be a cause of night leg cramps. Also, in looking over all of my other meds and supplements, he said to use no more than 99 mg of potassium gluconate per day. No cramps since these changes.
After years of having leg cramps, I asked my doctor for suggestions. He told me that drinking ordinary Tonic Water before bedtime can help. For me, it worked perfectly. I sip a glass of (diet) Tonic Water every night and I no longer have leg cramps at night.
I am fortunate enough to sleep lightly and usually feel a cramp coming on. Mine happen in my calves most often, when I feel my toes extending at the beginning of a cramp, I use my other foot to pull them back. Deep breathing, no excess movement, which seems to help keep the cramp from developing. Works on all but the hardest cramps for me.
