I mix Epsom salts with water (about half and half by volume) and keep it in a spray bottle by my bed. If I wake up with a leg cramp starting, I spray it on and rub it in. Works in seconds. Body absorbs magnesium better through the skin than orally. For restless legs I find potassium takes care of them in a few minutes.
I have really strong leg cramps. Back in the early 80's, I use to get quinine but it is no longer prescribed .Now, when I get the cramp I eat a kosher dill pickle. Works almost immediately!
I get a leg or toe cramps often during the night. I get up drink some dill pickle juice & it works almost immediately. My toes cramp most often and if I don’t get up & drink the juice it will continue for a while. Works for me.
Dill pickles fix it...also sip some dill pickle juice..fixes it up instantly.
Because of menopause, I keep a ceiling fan on at nite. I find that when my legs get cold or to much air , they cramp. A lightweight cover keeps them warm and helps prevent cramps. Bengay warms the muscles along with rubbing helps too.
I too get hard leg cramps after working hard and sweating alot. A friend told me how the coach of our local High School treats cramps in his football players. He gives them Yellow Mustard. It does work. So if you can eat yellow mustard two to three tablespoons will help to prevent leg cramps. Also, I use the Hyland Leg Cramp Pills. They also work.
My leg, foot, toe and hand cramps are predictable, i.e., after a strenuous day working outdoors and sweating profusely, I'm dehydrated. Even tho' I will drink several bottles of water, I'm primed for nighttime cramps. I found that Hylands Leg Cramps pills, which are dissolved under the tongue, give me almost immediate relief. They are an OTC item found in most pharmacies.
Have been using these two products for many years: 1st the best works in less than ten minuets Magnesium Chelate tablets 2nd next best and less effective Magnesia Phosphorus 20 X sublingual I take more than the recommendation on package suggestions.
I eat a pound of fresh leafy greens each day or juice green leafy vegetables and eat another 2 pounds of fruit. I do not eat table salt or pink salt, oils, added sugar, packaged or processed foods, no alcohol, no animal or anything with a face or mother, any water creature, no dairy.

I'm a senior but I'm in good shape and not on any prescriptions. I get occasional leg/foot cramps at night, especially after strenuous exercise (skiing/hiking/biking/swimming). I fight those cramps by drinking lots of h2o and downing a Calc/Mag pill after activity. I tend to sleep on my belly and hanging my feet over the edge of the bed reduces the chances of cramps. If I do cramp up, I sit up and grab my toes and pull towards me (as seen on NFL games on TV). Hylands makes a homeopathic Leg Cramps ointment that alleviates my cramps in a few minutes after massaging it in. The also make some pills which I've been told work very well and I plan on getting some. I'm not shilln' for Hylands either.
Thank you for this information... I recently over did it and got a cramp while pushing a wheel barrel up hill...it tore a muscle and caused anxiety..
Cramps are serious. I wonder about salt, as we over excersize, and sweat, and deplete salt ...also I have encorporated most of the preventive maintenance you suggest plus a glass of cherry juice before bed...thanks again
