Am in northern Virginia and planted my Astilbes between my Japanese Pieris bushes two seasons ago. Got lots of healthy green leaves the first season but no flowers. Made sure I mulched and kept the soil moist through the winter but this spring I'm again getting lots of healthy leaves but no flowers. Can you help?
I am starting a flower bed on the north side of my house - so this particular spot gets little to no sunlight. As of right now, it's an excellent spot to grow moss.. The soil is black, moist, and clay-like. Will Astilbe grow in conditions like this?
I planted 8 astilbe in front of my home facing north. I planted in clay/sand soil with slate stone landscaping. All plants are doing extremely well and all have flower spikes protruding from the base of plant. It's always moist in this area. I think what really helped me here is that I gave them all a nice watering with miracle grow for plants. After this watering they really took off. It also helps to get your stock from a nursery other than some place like Walmart...etc because they are healthier from the get go. I am in central Wisconsin near GreenBay.
I have honey bees are astilbe plants ok to plant?
Bees love Astible if that's why you're asking. Astible is an early summer flower and a big-time bee lover!
I'm in northeast Ohio and our winters are pretty harsh. Im doing a little spring cleaning and my Astilbes I planted last spring are brown and withered to the ground. Are they dead or will they come back in late spring? If there still is there anything I need to be doing to promote growth?
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and my Astilbes do very well. I put ground cover and leaves over them in the fall and they return every year. Fairbanks is rated a zone 2-3.

No plant is deer-proof but Astilbe are in the category of "seldom damaged." In other words, there are other plants deer would prefer to eat first, unless the winter conditions are truly severe.
