How to Plant, Grow, and Care for Marigold Flowers
The flowers of Tagetes marigolds are NOT edible, but those of Calendula are. The bright petals of Calendula add color and a spicy tang to salads and other summer dishes.
- The flower petals are sometimes cooked with rice to impart saffron’s color (but, unfortunately, not flavor).

My marigolds have died the past week. I am just asking about this to make my next batch of marigold not die out. After a few days of buying them with sunflowers while going home from vacation, i spotted some red dots. I found out that these small insects were the ones causing the webs. I tried to remove them but it keeps on getting worse. I did not try to wash them because I might wet the flower. After they died out, the bugs tranferred to my sunflowers and most of my crops and killed them. The crops included oregano plants, tarragon, and other herbs. Hopefully you know what these pests are. And also once i cutted the deadheads, i knowticed the stem was hollow and nothing was inside, and it was turning the stem brown. I am not so sure if the bugs caused these harm to my plants. Hey, I'm in Africa. I planted French marigolds seeds straight into my garden cause I don't want to have to transplant and its been seven days since no germination yet but I know it could take longer, I'm in Nigeria and I don't recall ever seeing in them in a garden before, we dont have winter here just harmattan And its warm most of the year w raining seasons here and there. I know they are annuals but how long would their life span be now that winter doesn't come into play (if they do grow).
Plus its warm now and close to harmattan season, the soil here is moist and has good drainage, I haven't fertilized cause the soil in my garden is v fertile and sun here is generous. Any tips?
Hello, I already have around six marigolds each in a separate pot which I bought two months ago. However, I noticed it grows downwards and there is no bloom until now. Anybody encountered this? What did you do?
I live here in the Philippines and the weather here is 29-38 degree Celsius.
hi. first time this year planted African marigolds ,they have been amazing .so my question is what do I have to do when winter comes ? leave them in or take out and repot..advice please. thanks.
African marigolds are warm-weather annuals, meaning they thrive in hot weather and only survive for one blooming season. This means that they will not survive the first frost of fall and will not come back in the spring, unfortunately. It would be best to let them die where they are, then clean up the spot and prepare it for the next batch of marigolds that you can plant in the spring.
I cut my plants back to the ground when it starts getting cold. In the spring they come back larger and pretty. So for me they are preninals.
Thanks Shelby
What area are you in that your Marigold plants come back in the spring as am annual?
I have a lot of marigold plants and when I walk around to water them my shoes turn orange is that from the Merigolds?
Yes—in fact, marigold flowers have been used to make natural yellow dyes for hundreds of years!
Hi. I got a free marigold plant at a local event and it's not doing very well right now. When I got it, it was in a Styrofoam cup and had many healthy leaves but no flowers. I transferred it into a big pot when i got home and filled it with good dirt from our garden. I left it in the sun, watered it daily, and talked to it on occasion. I had to leave for a vacation about 2 weeks ago. I was gone 5/6 days and came back to find that my dad didn't water my plant at all. It looks sad and most the leaves are dry and crumpled. The stem is still healthy looking.
Is there anything I can do to save it?
